The South Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) reports more mosquitoes from the health district have tested positive for West Nile virus. The positive mosquitoes were among those trapped in several locations in the greater Hastings area of Adams County on Aug. 15, and were identified as belonging to the Culex species, which are common carriers of the West Nile virus. Through fundraising efforts, the Lovewell Lake Association is sponsoring a fireworks display at Lovewell State Park in memory of Jim Reiter, long-time association volunteer. Yes, the pelicans have returned to Lovewell Lake. This photo was shot from the dry boat ramp in the cabin area. Because of problems with theft and vandalism, the City of Nelson has locked the public restrooms in the community’s Harbine Park. In recent weeks someone has been stealing the facilities’ paper supplies. The first incident was reported on Aug. 8 when a park employee checked the restrooms. There are new faces at Superior's Victorian Inn. The motel was recently sold by Dr. Timothy Blecha to Vijay Goupal. The motel was originally named the Plains Motel. It was constructed in 1963 by a group of Superior businessmen. The original building was added onto. The property was purchased by Dr. Timothy Blecha in 1996. Superior Public Schools launched a drive this week to build a database of all Superior High School alumni. Such a list was last built in the 1990s when the Superior START Committee had obtained a grant that provided for a quarterly newsletter mailing. The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) has awarded $898,139 in grants to support nine projects that will demolish dilapidated commercial properties across the state. The funds are provided through the Revitalize Rural Nebraska grant program. The Kansas Department of Revenue said the new standard license plate design, "To the Stars," is available. The new design was overwhelmingly chosen by Kansans in a December 2023 public vote, winning 53 percent of the total vote.
