There will be a presentation of four Quilts of Valor at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Nelson Community Center. Quilts of Valor are hand made quality quilts made to honor veterans. The fire risk was so high on Saturday that some fire departments encouraged farmers in their area to halt harvesting activities. Now in its 22nd year, Superior’s popular Candy Cane Lane is in trouble. Many of the early supporters of the program are no longer able to do the work of setting up and taking down the popular Lincoln Park display. In the past year, one of the spark plugs died and another is taking chemo treatments and unable to do the work he once did. Both also served as board members. Improvements continue to made at the Wildcat Community Track located west of Superior High School. Earlier this year a donation from Horizon Bank made it possible to complete the last phase in the track's restroom construction project. The Kansas Department of Agriculture and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment together advise Kansans to be alert to the human health risk caused by unvaccinated animals, following a second detection of rabies in a cat in the last two weeks. The two cases were in Jewell County and Harvey County, and both involved outdoor cats which exposed multiple humans and other cats. Members of the Superior and Hardy volunteer fire departments were engaged in a four-hour fight Monday afternoon involving hay bales at a feedlot and grain storage site operated by Matt Kile along the Webber Blacktop about two miles south of Superior. Sixteen members of the Superior department and eight from Hardy assisted by farmers with tractors and grapple forks fought the fire. An estimated 40 bales were lost. The Ruskin Volunteer Fire Department was called shortly before 8:45 Thursday evening to the Gaylen Cox farm where a large chicken house was reported to be on fire. Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. Cox said they had yet to learn the cause of the fire. The approximately 800 square foot building was destroyed by the fire and 18 chickens were lost.
