Improvements continue to made at the Wildcat Community Track located west of Superior High School. Earlier this year a donation from Horizon Bank made it possible to complete the last phase in the track's restroom construction project. The Kansas Department of Agriculture and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment together advise Kansans to be alert to the human health risk caused by unvaccinated animals, following a second detection of rabies in a cat in the last two weeks. The two cases were in Jewell County and Harvey County, and both involved outdoor cats which exposed multiple humans and other cats. Lawrence had the benefit of a group of veteran blood donors in Friday's Red Cross Bloodmobile visit to Lawrence. With their leadership, the visit exceeded the Red Cross goal and put another 45 units of blood products into the system for the Red Cross. Members of the Superior and Hardy volunteer fire departments were engaged in a four-hour fight Monday afternoon involving hay bales at a feedlot and grain storage site operated by Matt Kile along the Webber Blacktop about two miles south of Superior. Sixteen members of the Superior department and eight from Hardy assisted by farmers with tractors and grapple forks fought the fire. An estimated 40 bales were lost. The Ruskin Volunteer Fire Department was called shortly before 8:45 Thursday evening to the Gaylen Cox farm where a large chicken house was reported to be on fire. Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. Cox said they had yet to learn the cause of the fire. The approximately 800 square foot building was destroyed by the fire and 18 chickens were lost. On Monday, county election officers across Nebraska began mailing early voting ballots to voters who completed early voting applications and fulfilled the new voter identification requirement. It was reported a majority of those wanting to vote were following the identification requirement. Voters have two options to fulfill the requirement. A wild farm cat in Jewell County, located in the Webber area, has tested positive for rabies. This is the first animal that has tested positive for rabies in Jewell County for 2024. Rabies is a fatal viral disease in people and animals.
