With highway work picking up this spring, motorists should be slowing down in work zones. Highway work zones span the length of the construction area. The work zone begins with the Road Work Ahead sign and ends with the End Roadwork sign. Work zones are marked with additional signs, including a reduced speed limit. Governor Jim Pillen announced he is extending the statewide suspension of the authority of local fire chiefs to waive the open burning ban. The suspension is effective through midnight April 23, based on extreme dry and windy conditions that pose major fire risks. Rock Creek Station State Historical Park and the adjacent state recreation area near Fairbury have reopened to the public after a wildfire burned 1,800 acres of land. The historical park sustained significant damage after the wildfire, though the reconstructed historical buildings narrowly were saved from the flames. No damage occurred at the state recreation area, which offers camping and other recreation, including trails. The Superior Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire burning west of Webber Friday. Arden Russell, a rural Jewell County farmer, was moving round hay bales when he noticed his feet were becoming warm from the tractor. He moved the tractor from the hay yard to the road where the tractor became engulfed in flames. Scott Nondorf, Superior fire chief, reported five Superior units, with 11 responders, rolled to the scene. One hundred years of service is quite a duty for any structure, let alone one put out on the great plains of Nebraska. However, the Sacred Heart parish church in Lawrence will be observing its 100th birthday in 2024 and it is showing its age. On the outside, the top of the twin towers are 80 feet from the ground. The Lost Needle Quilters are still stitching away! Last week they began a new quilt. It is the size for a twin bed and perfect for a young cowboy. The main "blocks" were given to the quilters, and one of the members then put it together with coordinating fabric. When it is quilted, then one or more of the quilters will sew the binding on. As March ended the city’s natural gas customers received bigger than expected bills which some dismissed as being a result of colder weather or perhaps a carryover from last year’s artic event which sent the price of natural gas soaring.
