    Recognizing 55 years of service, the National Weather Service (NWS) presented the Benjamin Franklin award to Bob Levin, the official weather observer for the Smith Center area. The presentation was made at his home in Smith Center. Phil Poyner, meteorologist in charge from the forecast office near Hastings, and Mike Reed, observation program leader, presented the award.     The Kansas Department of Agriculture is requesting public comment on a proposal to limit the number of Callery pear trees (Pyrus calleryana) planted in Kansas each year. This includes trees with the names of Bradford, Cleveland Select, Chanticleer and others.     Esbon Community Center received grants from the Jewell County Foundation and Dane Hansen Foundation to help replace old worn out kitchen cabinets at the community center. The expense was not entirely covered by the grants. Some funds received from Roger Underwood Memorial and Delilah Pate Memorial were used to complete the project.
