    Last Tuesday the Red Cross Blood Mobile was in Lawrence at the American Legion. There were 38 donors and 44 units were collected..   • West Nile Virus found in Adams County mosquitoes

    The South Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) reported collections of Culex mosquitoes trapped in Adams County on Aug. 1, have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). Michele Bever, SHDHD health director, reminds residents that WNV can be spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. In 2022, 64 Nebraskans tested positive for West Nile virus, according to Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NDHHS), with 37 of these being neuroinvasive (infection of the nervous system).   • Public invited to help Good Samaritan celebrate survey

    The Superior Good Samaritan Society facility underwent their annual survey by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The survey, which takes more than three days to conduct, examines every aspect of the facility. Dietary, housekeeping, social services, patient care and documentation, in addition to many others, are subjected to a close inspection.   • Rare tornado strikes Sutton; creates state of emergency

    An unusual tornado struck the community of Sutton at 6:53 Saturday morning causing considerable damage to the northeast Clay County community. The National Weather Service has estimated the peak wind speed was 110 miles per hour. The tornado traveled about 1.6 miles and at its maximum was 260 yards wide. It lasted about 3 minutes.
