Elk Creek Country Club, Nelson, hosted the first day of the “Surf and Turf” on Saturday, August 15, with 21 3-person teams participating. Following golf, they had a prime rib supper. Sixty-three golfers made their way to the Lawrence Country Club on Sunday for the second day of the tournament. The final ladies night for the year was held at the Lawrence Country Club on Aug. 12, with eight women joining in on a beautiful evening. A scramble was played with Linda Kohmetscher and Dee Kohmetscher shooting a score of 35. A thank you was noted to Lacey Schroer who joined the women each night this year. Family members from Nebraska and Iowa were in Deweese this week to help with the 42nd annual Keith Hansen Memorial Demolition Derby which was held Sunday. Two of Hansen’s grandchildren entered the competition, Kiel Ploen of Schalier, Iowa, and his cousin, Nathan Ploen of Kingsley, Iowa. Kiel won the longest tow award for having come the farthest. Monday, Aug. 17, is teacher inservice from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Raider Boster club will hold a re-organization meeting from 6 to 6:25. Tuesday, Aug. 18, is the first day of school. According to Scott Butler, Superior Parks supervisor, the Lincoln Park dog run will be removed in the near future. Years ago, the dog run was thought to be a good idea for dogs and dog owners to share time in Lincoln Park - a time for fresh air and exercise for both dogs and owners. Now the dog run is overcome the odor of dog waste and not for fun and exercise. It’s a bug infested mess and a health hazard. For the health and safety of park visitors, the dog run will be removed in the near future....
We are finishing up what has been an unconventional session. It is definitely different than anybody could have imagined when we convened in January. Thanks to COVID-19, Nebraskans have changed the way they live their lives. The Couples Summer Golf league met in Nelson at the Elk Creek Country Club for a relaxing fun night. This week everyone teed off from the ladies tee boxes and then played alternating shots. Golfers had the option to putt either hole. This turned out to be rather challenging for some teams. Craig German golfed a 33 by himself since his regular partner was unable to come. Michael Saint grew up just west of Jewell and graduated from Rock Hills High School with the Class of 2014. He is also a graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) with both bachelor's and master's degrees. In addition, Saint possesses four national championship rings earned representing FHSU as a member of the shotgun club and shooting team. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) amended its travel quarantine list, removing the state of Florida and adding attendance at mass gatherings greater than 500 people. Additionally, those countries with a CDC Level 3 Travel Health Notice with restrictions remain. This list is effective for all persons returning to or entering Kansas on the effective dates. Brodstone Memorial Hospital employees donated a record 8, 950 pounds to the Nuckolls County Food Pantry through the Can-Care-A-Van on Monday. A little friendly competition helps make donations swell. In the past years there were car races, baseball and football games. This last week it was a hockey game. Donations are tallied by the pound, a cash donation of one dollar equaling two pounds. With fall hunting seasons coming up, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds hunters of temporary hunter education changes from which they can benefit. Until further notice, online-only hunter education courses, without the hunt safe session requirement, is allowed for ages 11 and older in Nebraska. Youth ages 11 to 15 who take the online hunter education course normally are required to attend a two-hour hunt safe session before they can receive a certificate of completion. Rosie Eilert Bosse, now from Onaga, Kan., grew up on the Gallagher-Eilert family farm west of Jewell. She graduated from Jewell High School with the Class of 1974. Even though the Rock Hills High School prom picnic had to be moved indoors, the junior and senior classes had a blast. Original plans were to hold the picnic in the park. The monthly board meeting of the Nuckolls County Historical Society was held Monday, in Pioneer Hall with 11 board members present. Steve Renz and Fred Meyers conducted the meeting. They are working on the railroad. The shortline railroad that operates the former Rock Island Railroad line across the center of Jewell County is seeking improvements to the track. Some 20,000 new ties along with ballast are being installed between Scandia and Lebanon and the line is being resurfaced. The line’s Republican River bridge between Scandia and Courtland which has been out of service for several years is to be reopened later this year. The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) program signup ends Aug. 28. CFAP covers price losses from Jan. 15 to May 14. It does not cover HRW wheat, grass, or alfalfa.
