Gosh . . . maybe it was something in the air . . . but to see the Husker volleyball team lose in the manner they did, and . . . to see the L-N boys basketball team lose in the manner they did . . . it was a tough weekend for Nebraska sports. On the other hand, both Husker basketball teams won. The best comment I heard concerning the women’s volleyball team was . . . “at least it wasn’t to Wisconsin.” A O Another word for “Atheist” is “Non-believer” and I’m guessing that this time of the Christmas Holy Day may be among the toughest times of the...

At what age did you realize you were becoming your grandmother? For me, it was 45. I own and use a shower cap, I have a handled brush in the shower to wash my back, I keep a back scratcher beside the bed, I have 20 pill bottles on the counter, I save jars, not just canning jars but all glass jars. I wash and reuse aluminum foil, freezer bags and have a tote full of cords that I have saved for just in case. George is turning into his father. He has been saving those plastic tubs that his peanut butter-filled pretzels come in to use for nuts and...

A lot is being added to the list and every time you think all the “need to do” things are covered, one or two things pop into your mind. Christmas cards are all addressed and ready but then you remember one or two others that didn’t get included, so the Christmas cards are once again gotten out. The list of Christmas gifts is reviewed. A loved one’s gift has not arrived yet and so the worrying begins...Will it get here in time or should a substitute gift be purchased? The gift wrapping paper is strung all over the kitchen counters and just wh...

We have a good news story to report this week. In early November the Hebron Journal-Register newspaper published a sad story about a missing cat named Simba. Simba was described as a domestic short hair tabby cat that had become the Deshler community's pet. Veterinarian Cindy Sasse told Nancy McGill, the editor of the Hebron paper, "We think he's between 15 and 20 (years old), we're not sure. Witnesses said they saw the male cat affectionately named Simba scooped up by a woman and placed in her...

Q: What is the difference between true and false Christians, and why do diverse Christians have so many definitions for this? A: Well, I suppose all I’m going to be able to do is add one more opinion to the diversity! But I will endeavor to make my opinion a biblical one, and also explain some of the other perspectives that people may have heard. Most fundamentally, a Christian is someone who follows the teachings and examples of Jesus Christ and the Apostles. Anyone who does so sincerely and accurately is a Christian, regardless of what I o...

Seems we can no longer paint California with negative issues because of all of the earthquakes that occur in that state. The Webster-Nuckolls County areas in Nebraska have had three earthquakes in the last two years. And . . . they seem to be getting closer to Lawrence all the time. This past Sunday a quake strong enough to be heard and felt happened some six miles northeast of Guide Rock. We have not heard of any damage caused by the quake. This was the third quake in this same general area in the past two years. A O Try . . . Try again . . ....

I’ve been spending some time within the medical establishment in the U. S. during the past two months and have learned some things about how the world operates. Two items stand out in the last few weeks: Insurance and 4 x 4’s. Insurance: Any reader of my words over the age of 65 are pretty familiar with Medicare and the insurance supplements that go with it to help pay for as much of it as possible. I’ve had my insurance supplements for some time now and assumed most everything was OK. That is, until a month or two back when I got a lette...

Q: In church we always get the line that we’re supposed to “obey the rules” but there are lots of rules that nobody obeys, including Christians. Do we get to pick which rules we obey? A: It might be a bit simplistic to say that Christians are always supposed to follow the rules. Daniel’s three friends broke a rule when they refused to bow to the king’s statue (Daniel 3:1-18). The Apostles were told that they were no longer to preach in the name of Jesus, a rule that they promptly disobeyed (Acts 4:13-22). Jesus also mentions David as a “rule-b...

In September, a reader of this newspaper shared her concern that today’s students do not understand the significance of September 11 for her son had been wished “Happy 9-11.” She considered such a wish to be inappropriate and said the schools were failing to teach the students about the significance of that day. Those of us who lived through 9-11 and the days that followed will never forget the fear and emotion of that day and the ones that followed. As I thought about that conversation, I recalled other important days in our nation’s history...

A classmate, friend, and neighbor has left us. A trooper to the end, in recent days she lost her battle with cancer. She will be missed by all that knew her. I was her classmate from 8th grade through high school graduation. In school, she was good at the few sports then available for girls. Our senior year, in home economics, we took our Betty Crocker tests to see what would make a good career for each of us. When we shared out results from this test most showed we’d make a good teacher, homemaker, secretary, business owner, etc. but this spec...

There was a statement recently shared about grandchildren, “some of the greatest blessings call us Grandma and Grandpa.” Grandparents certainly appreciate and agree with that statement. I know I do. Over Thanksgiving weekend, families and friends came together. That included grandparents with their grandchildren. It brought back precious grandparent memories of our past family times together. Thoughts came to mind of the joy on my grandmother’s face when a new grandchild was placed in her arms as she would rock back and forth, cuddling the l...

Did you ever get a song caught in your mind and it kept repeating itself over and over all day (or maybe more than a day) in your mind. Maybe it was a thought or phrase or whatever. Well, I recently heard a song and had to look up just when and where it came from. The name of the song is “People are Crazy.” It was written in 2008 and the three lines I keep hearing in my mind were: “God is Great!” “Beer is Good!” “People are Crazy!” I got to thinking: “God is Great.” That is the only one of the three lines that is true without qualificati...

Editorʼs Notebook By Bill Blauvelt While my father would later advertise that he offered tankwagon service, that was a misnomer. Dad offered tanktruck service for his bulk delivery tank was mounted on some kind of truck. His earliest Dodge truck was about the size of a modern pickup. As the years passed, the trucks got bigger. His largest, which was never put into service, held 5,000 gallons and was made to be pulled by a semi-tractor. I suspect the 1903 tankwagon had a steel tank mounted on wagon gear pulled by a team of horses or mules. A...

Q: Does having a church around actually benefit anything? What is it good for? A: That will depend on the church. Churches that are Bible-based, Spirit-filled and faithful will be tremendous blessings to the community they are a part of. Churches that are dead, toxic or legalistic are a heavy drag on the community and a disgrace to the name of Christ. While I am neither a Christian nor a pastor because I believe all churches are perfect, I do believe that faithful churches and Christians have the greatest potential for blessing both...

Duke found his voice! I’ve heard him bark, playfully, but he is not typically a vocal pup. My friend, Linda, popped in the other day. Like always, she walked on in. I knew she was there, I heard the door, but it caught Duke off guard. When he barked, I almost jumped out of my skin. He sounds scary! I guess that is what they mean by “his bark is worse than his bite.” I’m feeling a little better, and yes, I may have been feeling a little sorry for myself the past few weeks, but I’m allowed. Life is hard, and when one is not feeling well, it is a...

Whether you travel over the country roads, city roads, go short or long distances, or even if you remain at home hosting the family dinner, it is hoped you have a happy and thankful Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving Day may be extra special as family and friends get together, while watching the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade on television, or preparing to take in a great football game. Q: Does the commandment: “you shall not bear false witness” apply to gossip? If so, how? A: Fundamentally, the 9th commandment involves communicating what is not true (particularly in a judicial setting), while gossip (in the biblical sense) refers to speech that tears someone down behind their back. So then, gossip would not necessarily fall under the 9th commandment, however since both lying and gossip are sins of the tongue, they often go hand in hand. I only found one occurrence of the word gossip in the Bible (I Timothy 5:13). But oth...

Remembering back to my many Thanksgiving dinners growing up in Superior, I now realize how special they were. Aunt Lena and Aunt Freda, sisters of my father Paul, were regular attendees. Often present was my mother’s sister, Aunt Laura Koon, who lived in Lincoln, Nebraska. At times, we would also have cousin, Willie Jacobs, who rode the Burlington passenger train up from Atchison, Kansas. My mother, Myrtle Schmeling, was a gourmet cook and started preparing this special meal the night before Thanksgiving. We would start with a Jell-O salad w...

Memories . . . Some things we remember forever, others we forget as soon as possible. Sunday, a bad memory came rushing back because of driving to Sunday Mass on a gravel road soaked by about an inch or rain. I forgot what it’s like to drive on gravel roads when they are wet. It all came back to me . . . quickly. However, I did stay out of the ditch and I’m thankful for however much rain fell during these couple of days. Oh my gosh! The last week has been rough! I told you I had depression and fibromyalgia. Well, I started treatment for depression a couple of weeks ago. It was great at first, I had so much energy, I was waking up in the morning feeling rested, and I was getting things done. It felt like I went from being Eeyore to Tigger overnight. It was awesome. I enjoyed Saturday’s spring-like weather and appreciate the rain which followed but I am not looking forward to the colder temperatures and the possibility of snow which conclude the forecast for this week. That might be different if I had plans to put up ice. There was a time when putting away ice was a regular winter activity. Recently while reading an issue of the Ruskin Leader published in 1923, I came across a story distributed by the University of Nebraska Extension Service which advised every farm should have an ice house and farmers sho...

Today was a truly heartwarming day for me and I want to share with you the inspiring actions of young people I witnessed. After a church service that included many messages of thanksgiving, hubby and I motored to Hastings for lunch and to pick up a few needed items. Two young men, probably in their very early 20s, were seated across from us at lunch, and I could not help but overhear a portion of their conversation. One young man was recounting that he had changed his lifestyle and did not connect with many of his old friends, but that he...

A cousin left our family recently and though he died, the memories of him remain in our hearts. I am blessed to have so many cousins because both sides of the family had numerous children and from them came a lot of offspring. Dr. Suess said it best, “Sometimes you never will know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.” I’ve found as I age, I’ve had parents, aunts, uncles and now cousins die. Oh, I always knew they were important to me and other family members but we think we will always have them around to talk to, to give us hugs,...
