The community is gearing up for the weekend’s activities for the Vestey Festival, to be held in Superior, the Victorian Capitol of Nebraska. The Victorian Era was named so because it was the time of the long reign of Queen Victoria of England, 1837-1901. It was during the Victorian Era that many influences and practices were done in certain ways, maybe not so much in rural America but in England and in urban area in the United States. Most of these practices and rules certainly would not be accepted in today’s society. Here are just a few of th...

With the expectation that thousands of visitors will visit Superior this weekend, community residents are working to make sure the community is looking the best possible. Mother Nature has cooperated and the vegetation looks great. Here at the newspaper we decided we should spruce up our windows. Since the festival was not held last year, it may have been two years since some of the windows had been washed. It has taken repeated baths to get the accumulated grim off. We also decided to change...

Presenting Biblical answers to tough questions Q: The Bible says we ought to “turn the other cheek.” Does this mean that Christians should not be soldiers or police officers? Is it always wrong to fight? A: The Bible does instruct believers to turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:38-42). In context, the passage instructs us not to seek revenge for wrongs done against us personally, instead to show grace by repaying evil with good (see also Romans 12:18-20). Christians should let go of a vindictive spirit and forgive all offences committed aga...

The good news first . . . In dealing with the yearlong pandemic all athletic events should be put in a separate category. It hasn’t been an easy year. However, over the weekend, a special event did occur. The Nebraska Cornhusker 2021 Baseball Team captured the Big Ten championship trophy. We know the anxious feeling most Husker fans felt with the results of the football team, the basketball team and even the volleyball team schedules. It isn’t a national championship, but it is the Big Ten Baseball championship. Put it with the Bowling Tea...

With one crazy week in the rearview and another in the windshield, I’m feeling somewhat overwhelmed. Our Omaha boys will be here for Memorial Day weekend and into the next week, and fingers crossed, the pool will open that weekend as well, or at the very least shortly after. As with every year, it has been a struggle getting everything working correctly. I have to say I have had more help this year from the lifeguards than I have had in years past, and that, my friends, is a miracle! I have a love-hate relationship with the pool. I love working...

Flowers make memories! Recently I went to my parent’s farmstead, and in the yard were two lilac bushes my mother had planted years ago. To my surprise the bushes were filled with beautiful lilac lavender blooms. They stirred memories of when she transplanted those bushes, took care of them and every year looked forward to seeing and enjoying their fragrant blooms. Another example of flower memories was when I filled my large pots with pansies remembering my Granny Boyles having planted them in pots on her porch. This Mother’s Day, I was sur...

Last week I made the mistake of starting a story in this space but not completing it. When I had used my allotted space I promised to continue the story this week. I should have known better than to make such a promise and then turn to other work. It is okay to publish a story in segments but those segments should be written in order. Instead I paused a week and now I can’t remember what stories I planned to share this week. Last week I wrote about Republican River bridges at Superior. The story started with the first bridge approved by the res...

Did you know, or do you even care ? ? ? Renewable fuels have been getting a lot of publicity since the new president began his new term in January. The new administration is promoting wind and solar projects in favor of gas, oil and coal types of energy. Think about the cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline that is supposed to be replaced by all those renewable energy sources . . . which are not even planned yet. I do not reject renewable energy projects, but everyone must be aware that we are going to be spending more money for them versus...

I am so thankful school is out this week. Like so many others, my son is ultimately over it, and I am over having to motivate him. He has a couple of summer jobs lined up, and I hope a paycheck is enough to keep him moving. I’d like to have at least one month off from nagging him about responsibility. I still can’t believe he will be a senior next year. Things are moving along at the money pit. Not as quickly as we had planned, but they are moving. We pulled most of the old water lines this weekend and started installing the new ones. I am quit...

Presenting Biblical answers to tough questions Q. What does Fear of the Lord mean? Should I be afraid of God? A: Let me explain the fear of the Lord by this illustration: I respect the rules of the road and would never deliberately drive on the wrong side, because I ‘fear’ the consequences of a wreck. In the same way I am aware of the awesome power and magnitude of God and seek to live on the right side of His will. I do not tremble and shake while driving because I am confident of my own safety; so long as I follow the rules! In the same way...

Have you ever had one of those weekends packed with activities and so many different emotions? With high school graduations occurring in schools in communities near and far, some parents and grandparents were having to travel to a loved one’s graduation in one direction in the morning and turn around to hurry off in another direction to a second loved one’s graduation. Weddings were held this same weekend. Then there was Mother’s Day. It made one’s head spin trying to go to every occasion and celebration on the weekend. For myself, the recent...

Many of us give little thought to zipping across the Republican River several times a day. We have grown accustomed to easily crossing the river on wide, substantial bridges, but that hasn’t always been the case. A narrow Webber Road bridge was nearly the undoing of the gang which robbed the Security National Bank Nov. 22, 1934. After gathering up their loot, gang members took hostages and left Superior at a high rate of speed. An eyewitness report said all four wheels of the get-away-car were off the ground as the robbers soared over the Misso...

There is a reason for everything. It is just we don’t always know the reasons. I bring this up this week because in the middle of last week, I received a phone call. It was the “Federal Marshall’s Service.” I was told my name came up in an investigation and they wanted to talk to me. If I would just push the number 1 on the phone, they would connect me to a real live person who would talk to me about their concerns. By now, I realize this was a recording talking to me. I was told by the recording that if I should delete the call without talking...

Presenting Biblical answers to tough questions Q: Why would God allow an immoral couple like Judah and Tamar to be in the genealogy of Christ? A: It is a common misconception to think that God only allows perfect, “holy” people to participate in his will. This is backwards; God does not pick holy people to use in His plans; the people he picks are holy because He picked them! Romans 3:10 tells us that no one is righteous, or good enough to meet God’s holy standards. If God held tryouts for those seeking to be used by him, or limited his work...

Though mothers are thought of and remembered all year through, Mother’s Day is a special time to be thinking of her. Though my mother and both of my mother-in-laws, whom I had been blessed, are no longer with us, their love and devotion to their families lives on in the hearts of their loved ones. Grandmothers also hold a special place in our hearts. Along with our mothers and mother-in-laws, they are shaping us, or have shaped us, into who we are today. A mother’s love and dedication to her family are God given. The sacrifices given to her...

I have a sister-in-law from Chicago who expressed her surprise at the length, depth, and extent Nebraskans discuss current weather conditions. On one of her first visits to the Lawrence area she was blessed with a rain. After being out and visiting with several local people she noted the following: “In Chicago, if it rains we acknowledge the rain and move on to other subjects. Here (meaning Nebraska) if you ask someone about the rain last night, you get a half hour discussion.” At the time she did not appreciate the importance of an inch of...

Presenting Biblical answers to tough questions Q: Why would a good God allow demons to exist? A: Let me begin with some background. For those who don’t know, the Bible tells us that there are a multitude of spiritual beings called angels who dwell with God in heaven (Psalm 103:20; Daniel 7:9-10). The Bible also indicates that a powerful angel rebelled against God in the distant past and deceived a third of the angels into joining him (Revelation 12:3-9). These beings would come to be known as Satan and his demons; the spiritual enemies of G...

A drive on the country roads this week would show fields covered with beautiful purple flowers blooming ever so proudly. Now if you are a K-State fan, or a fan of the color purple, it would look pleasing to the eye, but if you are a farmer, this brilliant blooming purple flower is nothing more than a hated weed. This year, this weed is appearing in abundance. Upon research, I learned this blooming purple weed could be either Purple Deadnettle or Henbit. After reading descriptions of both of these weeds, it seems most of what is seen in these...

Monday morning I received an e-mail message from a former country school teacher advising it was going to be a nice day and I should schedule a reporting and photography trip that would allow me to be outside. It was a suggestion I wanted to accept. I remembered my childhood when I took my red chair and went to watch nearby construction projects. I could sit on that chair by the hour and entertain myself watching men work. I watched projects like the blacktopping of Highway 14, extension of a bridge, construction of the Courtland Canal, and...

I got the taxes done, and we got our refund. Yay! We paid off a debt that has been weighing on me for almost a year now. I can’t tell you how good that felt. We even had money left so we decided to see if we could get some things we need, like appliances. I’ve never had new appliances. After looking at them, I may never have new appliances! LOL! Oh, but you can make payments! No thank you! The only payment I want is my car payment. In actuality, I don’t want that one either. George and I have been considering purchasing a king-size bed as we...

It’s prom time! Area high schools have been hosting the annual proms the past two week-ends. Social media has been abuzz with photos of grandchildren, children and other students dressed up in their finest attire. Gone are the jeans with the cuts slit up and down the legs. Instead the girls wore the latest in full length gowns, with their hair done in the stylist hairdos and looking grown up. The guys wore the usual classy black, gray or white tuxedos, but some guys went all out wearing gold, silver or colorful dress jackets. There were p...

Though we awoke Tuesday morning to find the ground was covered with puffy snow, apparently the custom harvesters are anticipating the arrival of spring and wheat to harvest in the southern states. The editor of this newspaper was looking out the front window of the newspaper office, when he should have been writing this column and saw what appeared to be a custom harvesting crew heading south. Highway 14 has long been a popular route for the harvesters. When the Blauvelt family operated a gasoline station near the Kansas-Nebraska stateline, we...

  • Licorice, the ultimate treat

    Richard Schmeling|Apr 22, 2021

As a child growing up in Superior, a trip to Mel Thieme’s White House Grocery Store just across the street south of the Superior High School usually involved buying a bottle of pop, a candy bar, a Popsicle or an ice cream bar, but sometimes, it would result in the purchase of some licorice. There were licorice choices. One of the choices came in a package of short chunks of black licorice put out by Nibs. Those are still around. You could also buy long strands of what appeared to twisted licorice tubes. My favorite was the shorter, solid piece...

What a trip . . . A gray wolf in Nebraska is something we often connect to our frontier heritage, most likely taken place in the 1800s. But, that may be changing. A bit unusual, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reported last week that a large canine killed January 28 near Ueling, Neb., was indeed a gray wolf, not a large coyote. I suspect many of us remember stories of wolves from our younger days. We got most of them from books or early “Western” movies or TV shows. The wolf was hunted to where they were almost eliminated except in may...

My baby attended his junior prom Saturday. How time flies! He looked so handsome and grown up in his tux. It’s hard to believe he will be a senior next year. I’m not sure if I should be getting the baby photo’s out and crying or celebrating that he will be out of the house in another year or so. Technically I still have two more to go after Jacob, but being the evil step-mom, I’m not sure how involved I will get to be in any of that. Tuesday evening, when the sirens went off, I grabbed my keys and my camera and headed out the door. I wasn’t act...
