The June monthly meeting for the Mankato Chamber of Commerce took place Wednesday June, 14, at Bobs of Mankato with 10 members and one guest present. Haley Nelson gave an update on the membership drive. One new member joined last month bringing the total in dues income to $3,245.00 for this year. You may recognize the name Sonny Johnson from his discovery of a Mammoth bone in 2016 when he was just 12 years old. He found the bone while he was out shed hunting (deer antler hunting) about one-fourth mile from his home. Summer Learning Opportunities began Monday at the Rock Hills schools. The classes are led by Kansas State University professors via Zoom. The hands-on activities are facilitated by science teachers from Rock Hills. Each week starts a new week of hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) activities. Summer’s here. Superior’s big swimming pool opened for the 2023 season as scheduled on Tuesday. Admission was free and, as expected, the pool was a popular place for the community’s youngsters. For many years the Superior Chamber of Commerce advertised the pool as the state’s seventh largest public pool. While such records are no longer maintained, no one has challenged the claim. Swimming season is almost here. It appears the Superior Municipal Pool will miss the traditional Memorial Day opening but not by much. This is a big week for the community of Superior for it is time for the 31st Lady Vestey Victorian Festival. In honor of the late Lew Hunter and his contribution to Superior, this year’s festival theme is the “Reel Story, Let the Credits Roll.” Hunter was an acclaimed screen writer and UCLA Professor who in his retirement years made Superior his home and taught screen writing classes in the Victorian style Day Home. The historic Burr Oak limestone schoolhouse will be open to the public, Memorial Day from 1 until 3 p.m. Located inside the former schoolhouse in the rooms that once served as classrooms, is the Burr Oak Museum that tells the history of the town and its once many businesses, area churches, clubs and organizations. Though the Superior Alumni Association hasn’t held an alumni banquet in recent years, Superior High School graduates and friends are not being forgotten this Memorial Day Weekend.
