Just when I got used to writing 2022, it is about to change and I’ll have to start remembering it is 2023. It seems the years keep coming and going faster and faster. I’ve been through the growing and prosperous years of the 1950s as America grew in population and manufacturing as the WWII soldiers came marching homeward. Things were so different back then. Yes, I’ll admit I was one of those Baby Boomers. It’s hard to believe but a brand new 1955 Bel Air Chevy cost about $2,000. In 1950, a nine-room modern house in Massachusetts would cost ab...
On a recent Wednesday morning, I parked across the street from the Superior City Park Bandshell, and carried bundles of that week's issue of The Superior Express into the CPI convenience store. I filled the store's newspaper rack, counted the prior week's unsold copies and returned to my vehicle. I recorded the sales in a notebook I keep in my vehicle for that purpose and looked across the street at what had been for nearly 40 years my grandparents home. Before I headed to my delivery point, I...
By Teraesa Bruce Our washing machine broke down. I swear if it’s not one thing, it’s another! I had started a load of laundry and came upstairs for something and noticed the smell of burnt rubber. The smell was coming from the basement, and at first, I was worried the dryer was trying to catch fire. Nope, it was the washer. Currently, it is in several pieces on the basement floor. Upon inspection, George found the pump was leaking and we could no longer get parts for the thing. Robert made it home last Tuesday evening, swishy breaks and all...
No. 52 . . . look forward to that number every year. For people in the weekly newspaper field, it usually means we’ve lived another year. Some years there are 53 Thursdays, but we just don’t worry about those years. Happy New Year to everyone, May God bless each of you and answer everyone’s prayer for peace in the world. A O Boredom . . . In spite of ‘millions’ of things to do, there are times we all “get bored.” Even in the middle of the professional football season on a Sunday afternoon. Several weeks back, Russ Menke stopped to visit a li...
December brought announcement of plans for two additional shuttle loading elevators to be built in this area. As has long been the tradition, area churches held special services to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ more than 2,000 years ago in the small village of Bethlehem. This year an Express staff member attended the Christmas Eve service at the Union Church of Hardy. The church bell rang out at 5 p.m. to announce the start of the service. Lanterns with candles burning lined the steps to the church as the faithful gathered for the service. Kevin Miller opened the service with a welcome. The...
Superior may be a small town but its hometown supermarket is home to the latest innovations in technology. Shannon and Jenny McCord, operators of Superior's Ideal Market, recently installed two self-checkout stations. The stations allow customers to quickly check out their purchases while avoiding waiting in line. Shannon stressed he was not cutting back on cashiers but the stations are for customer convenience. Someone with a two or three item order can check themselves out without having to...
This is the time of year we often think of past memories. Some as good and some not so good. Avis Shaw recalls her brother-in-law, Cecil, and his wife, June, came to visit the farm quite often. They stopped by one summer day; it must have been a weekday because her late husband, Butch, wasn’t home. “We were sitting around the dining room table and a bee flew through. Pretty soon there went another one and another. “I opened the stair door and there were more. I decided I’d better look outside. The bees were swarming on the north side of the...

The Courtland Journal The first time I went with Mom and Dad to the Formoso Community Christmas Dinner it felt weird to think we were just showing up even though we knew several people who expected would be there. It was only the three of us so it didn’t make sense to prepare a big holiday meal at the house. A few years later, we added Ray and I helped LaVernia Peters do dishes while Ray and Dorothy Sjolander had a few laughs. Fast forward to this year and the Formoso Community Dinner was on the official agenda of our trip south fro M...

This Christmas season the Jewell County Record office staff experienced their own version of the Chevy Chase National Lampon’s Christmas. The office was closed on both Thursday and Friday and telephone calls transferred to the staff members’ home which made for four days with no one in the office. When staff members opened the front door Monday, they were surprised with a flash of movement but they weren’t immediately certain of the sourc...
