  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Dec 28, 2023

It’s time to change the calendar and begin a new year. 2023 offered some challenging times for our family but it also offered some rewards. We had a granddaughter graduate from high school and head off for college at K-State. Another granddaughter was married and we finally gained a grandson. Recently another granddaughter graduated from Fort Hays University and went right into a teaching job. Who knows what 2024 will hold? It looks like at least two wars will continue. Iceland is having some nasty volcanoes and the conflicts will go on a...

  • Dimming Headlights

    Richard L. Schmeling|Dec 28, 2023

On the old 1930s and 1940s era automobiles there was a pedal at the extreme left side of the floor board which the driver used to switch the headlights from high beam to low beam. When my Aunt Lena got a Buick Super (three portholes instead of the 4 portholes of a Roadmaster) in the early 1950s, her car had an “automatic dimming” feature on it. A device on the dash was pointed forward and would register when a bright light came toward it and dim the headlights. This device was not perfect and often would dim the headlights from the return off...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Dec 28, 2023

Q: Did you say in a previous article that you are neither a pastor nor a Christian? A: Whoops! I’d better clarify! In responding to the question about how a healthy church can benefit its community, I said this: “While I am neither a Christian nor a pastor because I believe all churches are perfect, I do believe that faithful Churches and Christians have the greatest potential for blessing both individuals and communities throughout the world.” In saying this, I meant to say that neither my faith nor my calling as a pastor rests upon the quali...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Dec 28, 2023

This week, while looking over the Jan 7, 1904 issue of a Nelson paper and preparing a story for next week’s issue of the Nuckolls County Locomotive-Gazette, I read a brief story I didn’t expect to find in the county seat paper. It said Will Blauvelt surprised his home folks in Hardy when he returned with a bride, Ida Hearne. When the Hardy residents learned 21-year-old Will had married, a group of Hardy young people attending the McDowell party went to the Blauvelt home and serenaded the newlyweds. I knew about the Dec. 24 wedding for in my...

  • Puffs

    Dec 28, 2023

We’ll end this year’s observations with another comment on technology. I’m sure when the farmer about a 100 years ago made the change from using horses to plow their fields to tractors there was a lot of complaining when the tractor broke down and didn’t work. Horses were looking across the fence laughing. Well, maybe not laughing, but the farmer was wondering just why they went out and purchased this new technology. Last week, several items were missing from the Locomotive Gazette that I will blame on ‘technology.’ As with most of the world no...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|Dec 28, 2023

Mark it on your calendar, 120 days from Dec. 21, because we should get one heck of a storm. I had to drive to Lincoln and back in that fog on Thursday. The morning part of the drive wasn’t bad at all. I left around eight so I would be able to do a little last minute Christmas shopping before my appointment with the allergist. I was quite shocked with how tame the shopping mall was, it being just four days away from the holiday. Although it was getting pretty crowded by the time I left at noon. I hate shopping so close to a holiday, any h...

  • An unconventional Christmas program in Oak

    Dec 28, 2023

On the last Sunday before Christmas 1983, the members of Oak's First Community Church held a rather unconventional Christmas program. That was not unusual for the church under the leadership of Pastor Henry Knotts. The year before the program was built around the showing of photographic slides taken in 1943. In 1983 the program was held in the basement of the church which had been decorated to resemble Bethlehem at the time Jesus Christ was born. The congregation gathered in the sanctuary as...

    Randy Nielsen|Dec 28, 2023

By On Dec. 8, a 1930 Ford Model A half-ton truck was parked on Central Avenue for Superior's Once Upon a Christmas event. A sled, some decorative pillows and a red blanket were placed in the back for photo opportunities. Years ago, Gene Genung had a 1924 Model T Coupe but at that time, he needed a pickup. A fellow in town named Roy Drapal had a 1930 Ford Model A and they were able to work out a trade. Genung regularly drove the truck to work in the late 1970s. At the corner of 7th and Louden, Ge...

  • Farmerʼs wife shot near Superior in December of 1933

    Dec 28, 2023

Last week’s homicide was terrible but it not the first time a domestic dispute in the Superior area ended in a shooting and a sad Christmas season for those involved. The Superior Express reported on Dec. 21, 1933 that Mrs. T. B. Smith was hospitalized in a critical state as a result of gun shot wounds. She told authorities that her husband shot her while her adopted son, John, held her. At that time both Mr. Smith and John were being held in the county jail at Nelson. Dec 28, 2023

Those folks in this area who were dreaming of a white Christmas got what they wanted this week, and perhaps a bunch more. The folks who had Christmas travel plans, they didn’t fare so well. It wasn’t the storm of the century as some early forecasts indicated it might be but it was enough to snarl the holiday plans of many. A slow moving blizzard swept across Nebraska just touching the northern part of Nuckolls County. Though much of our prime circulation missed the blizzard, generally several inches of snow were received. The storm which began...
