  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Dec 26, 2024

Christmas is here! The true meaning of Christmas is celebrating the birth of our Savior who came to give Salvation to those who believe. With Christmas comes many happenings, memories, thoughts, traditions and sentimental feelings. It could be cradling a new born baby at a family gathering, the proud feeling seeing a grandchild get up on stage and share a Christmas reading, seeing the excitement of a child opening a present, making a family favorite dessert that grandmother used to make for past family Christmas dinners, sharing memories of...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Dec 26, 2024

editor’s notebook It will not surprise anyone who has ever talked to me for more than 5 minutes that I like to tell stories. As a youngster growing up hanging around my family’s gasoline station, I had lots of opportunities to listen to the stories told by the loafers who gathered at the there. One of my favorite story tellers was the late Aage Jensen but he wasn’t the only one, there were many others. Recently I was telling a younger person about the day a dump truck driver stopped at the station and asked me to fix one of the tandem dual tire...

  • Holiday Spirit

    Nancy Stafford|Dec 26, 2024

Some years it was hard to get into the Holiday Spirit. When my husband and I became empty nesters was one of these times. Although we celebrated at our parents’ and in-laws’ houses with the children and grandchildren, all the decorating and hoop-a-la of getting ready fell by the wayside. This year has been one of the “hard to get into the mood” times. I could blame it on the high price of everything but that would be too simple. Because I am only responsible for my own daily expenses. I have extra money to splurge on special extras for others....

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Dec 26, 2024

Q: What do we know about the Christmas star? A: The term “star” in the Bible can refer to any small heavenly body. Shooting stars, planets and galaxies would have all been referred to as stars in biblical times, because they all look the same to the naked eye. The sun and moon would not have been thought of as stars, even though we now know that the sun is a kind of star, it wasn’t called a star in Bible times. So then, when the magi claimed to have seen the star of the newborn king of the Jews, shooting stars, galaxies, planets and genuine sta...

  • Anhydrous ammonia leak closes High 14

    Dec 26, 2024

Highway 14 was closed near the Clay County line for a time Friday morning after two anhydrous ammonia nurse tanks broke free from a tow vehicle, left the highway and crashed in a ditch about a mile north of the Highway 4 East junction. The tanks apparently were partially full of the compressed gas which turned to a hazardous vapor as it escaped from the tanks. Some drivers attempted to drive through the gas cloud before emergency responders arrived and closed the highway. Driving through the clo...

  • Accounting books from early business found

    Dec 26, 2024

Chad Hansen recently brought by the newspaper office a rusty gallon can filled with nine century old tally books that apparently once belonged to the Scoular-Bishop Grain Company. The Hansens found the books while remodeling a house at 644 Central Avenue. A previous owner of the house also previously owned a building at Second and Bloom Street which was once housed the general offices of the Scoular Company. It is assumed he may have found the books in that building. The oldest entry appears to be from 1902 and while apparently not all...

  • Esbon Central Valley Ag to close

    Dec 26, 2024

Central Valley Ag Esbon Co-op is closing its doors, the gasoline pumps and building will all go up for sale. They will announce more in the sale in the next couple of weeks. It’s thought they’ve closed several facilities in Nebraska over the last year. Apparently there is not enough business to keep the elevator open. Although the fuel pumps are extremely important to the residents of Esbon, it’s not enough for the co-op to continue on. Apparently there there was a letter sent out to the farmers in the area that advised of the closing. Esbon...

  • Raider Boys Basketball has slim win; big loss

    Dec 26, 2024

As noted before L-N plays a tough schedule and this week showed that clearly. The boys won over Class D-2 Shelton, but got bounced by Class C-2 EMF. Seems they often have won/loss weekend often because so many of the games are against larger schools. The results of last weekend games: L-N – SHELTON: 46-43: Last week, the first of two games before the Holiday break involved a trip to Shelton to play the 4-1 Shelton High School on Thursday night.
