    Though the first shipments of the newly approved COVID-19 vaccines are arriving in this area, the vaccine didn’t arrive in time for some people. Monday night South Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) officials reported four additional COVID-19-related deaths, bringing the health district total of deaths attributed to the virus to 46. Others with the virus have died but their death was attributed to other causes.     Local skies were clear Monday night and many residents were out after sundown looking into the western sky and filled with antcipation. They hoped to see the much hyped great conjunction when the two largest planets in the solar system, Jupiter and Saturn, align to create a rare event that some thought would resemble the biblical Star of Bethlehem, also known as the Christmas Star.     The Nuckolls County Board of Commissioners met for their regularly scheduled meeting at the county courthouse in Nelson, Monday. All three commissioners were present. The board worked through a light agenda.     Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska has set the first quarter 2021 schedule for clinics held by Womens, Infants and Children Program (WIC). The program currently serves more than half of all infants born in the United States.     Kaylene Rumsey and Kaylene Badger have joined with Usborne Books to sponsor Senior Holiday Activity Bundles for presentation to residents of area nursing homes including the Good Samaritan Center in Superior and the homes in Beloit. Donors were enlisted to help finance the purchase of activity books like adult coloring books, word and number puzzle books. Donations form local donors were matched by Usborne Books.     As of Tuesday morning, 8,985 Nebraskans had received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine since the first shipments began arriving in the state a week ago. The first round of vaccines were targeted to hospital and health care workers providing direct patient care, as well as emergency medical technicians, paramedics and those who will be vaccinating priority groups in the months to come.     On Thursday, Susan Newell at the Jewell County Rural Health Clinic gave the first COVID-19 vaccine in the county. The Pfizer vaccine was administered to front line employees at the hospital and to the residents of the long-term care.     After encountering several game cancellations, the Rock Hills High School basketball team opened their 2020-2021 season with a 51-18 loss to the St. John’s-Tipton Blujays at Mankato, last Tuesday.     Michael L. Higbee, 60, was born July 18, 1960, in Concordia, Kan., the son of Jack L. and Nancy A. (Reed) Higbee. Michael graduated from Mankato High School with the Class of 1978. Following high school, Michael attended Cloud County Community College and then Kansas State University, before returning to the family farm.     Jerry P. Bohnert, age 72, of Topeka, died Friday, Dec.18, 2020, at the Topeka Center in Topeka. Jerry was born March 24, 1948, in Beloit, the son of Roy and Lelah (Opplinger) Bohnert. Jerry graduated from Topeka High School in 1967. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. He married Cathy Campbell in 1976. They later divorced. Jerry worked at the Veterans Administration Medical Center until he retired in 1996. Jerry enjoyed trains of all kinds.
