The stores are bursting with Christmas decorations, gifts and delicious holiday menu options. Whenever I walk into such a store, it takes control to remain on point with my Christmas shopping list in hand to find only the things needed. It is hard though with so many items to see and imagine gifting or decorating our home with. In all the hustle and bustle of this Christmas season, we should remain focused on the true “Reason For The Season,” the birth of our Lord Jesus. My thoughts turn back to the simple Christmas programs at my home cou...
A few months ago an Omaha World-Herald reporter asked if I was the longest serving of any current Nebraska newspaper editor. Though I have been in this editor’s position for 52 years and have sat behind the same Alma brand desk for 47 years, I didn’t know how to answer him. It was a question I hadn’t considered. I do know I hold the record for both the editor’s and publisher’s title at The Superior Express. I also know I am far from obtaining the oldest title of any editor in Nuckolls County. That record is held by the late F. A. Scherzing...
One year my husband and I decided to sell Christmas trees in Connecticut with a friend, Rick. We bought an old truck with a tool body on it. After buying two wheels with tires from two different junk yards, we traveled to Pennsylvania to buy 100 trees. We bought another wheel with better tread and took off the tool body, replacing it with a plywood flat bed. When we returned to Connecticut with the trees, we proudly put up a “trees for sale” sign and put six trees in the sale spot we had picked under a three-way bridge. The next morning we fou...
It’s raining! Usually, I would be down in the dumps because of the gloomy weather, but I am thankful for the warmer temperatures. It seems odd to me that it is raining in December and 50 degrees, but I’ll take it. The politicians would say it’s “climate change,” but I feel it’s simply the natural cycle of things. If I remember correctly, this area we call home was once desertlike. The past couple of weeks have been rough. I’ve been down in the dumps and swamped with emotions. I get lost in my head over all the ways I’m falling behind and then...
Gosh . . . what a week! Everyone says a person gets busy around Christmas time. That I believe, but I have done very little Christmas related so far. I’m not sure just where this week’s letter will go, but I’ll get started with a few comments concerning the acquisition of a certain virtue, called patience. • Had a question concerning the operation of a new kitchen appliance. Called in and waited about 1 1/2 hours to even talk to someone. • Another trip was to the E R at the hospital over the weekend. Doctors and nurses were quick to see us, b...
Actions taken Monday evening during the regular monthly meeting of the Superior Board of Education bring significant change. Early in the meeting, Jason Jensen was recognized for his eight years of service as a board member. This was his last monthly board meeting. He played a significant role in establishing the beef in school program. In November, Brad Biltoft and Matt Bargen ran for school board as incumbents and were reelected. Krista Tatro also ran for the position for the first time and was elected. She will fill Jensen’s position. S...
The numbers of COVID-19 cases and influenza are rapidly increasing and healthcare officials are urging people to do their part to prevent a winter surge of respiratory illnesses by getting vaccinated against both viruses. COVID cases grew at an expotential rate in Nebraska last week, with the 3,619 new virus cases the count is up 83 percent from 1,982 the previous week according to a report from the Federal Centers for Disease Control. In the Lincoln and Omaha metropolitan counties the number of reported cases more than doubled. This is the...
Next year, 2023, marks the beginning of the new Nebraska license plate issuance cycle. Since the last plate issuance year, 2017, license plate options have significantly increased with the expansion of the number of available specialty plates. There are currently 52 different specialty plates available “Nebraskans have more options for vehicle license plates than ever before,” said Rhonda Lahm, director of the DMV. Planning ahead will help us serve you more efficiently if you choose to order a specialty plate.” For Nebraskans who are consi...
A family with multi-generational ties to Hardy is reeling this week after a fire Monday morning destroyed family members’ home in Osborne and left one family member dead. Firefighters were called to the 335 South Third Street address shortly after 5 a.m. Monday. They arrived to find the home of Rod and Kristi Gruber totally engulfed in flames. As the fire was brought under control and the investigation into it cause started, the body of the Grubers’ son-in-law, David Dean, 32, was found in the northeast corner of the house. Among his sur...
While residents of this area were rejoicing Tuesday to have received much needed rain, residents to the west were dealing with a major winter storm. Both Interstate Highways 80 and 70 were closed because of the storm. West bound travelers on I-80 were being stopped at North Platte. West bound travelers on I-70 were being stopped at Oakley. Locally, it was hoped the rain was sufficient to finally put out the grass fire that earlier swept across western Nuckolls County from near Bostwick to the Lawrence area. According to unconfirmed reports,...

A small non-descript “Record” book as recently resurfaced. The Hebrew word “Pisgah” means summit. The biblical Mount Pisgah is in the Jordanian mountains east of Israel’s Jordan River and northeast of the Dead Sea. It is also known as Mount Nebo. The elevation of Jewell County’s little-known Mount Pisgah is about 500 feet. Our Mount Pisgah is located just to the northeast of Montrose and west of the long-gone town of Delta, both in Washington Townshi...
