The 2024-25 Basketball seasons for high schools across Nebraska began last weekend with the Raider boys’ teams playing Friday and Saturday night. The L-N Lady Raiders opened their 2024-25 basketball season last weekend with a bit of a rough opening. Both games were lost. Enough high-lights were seen, however, that may bode well for the coming season. The game summaries: L-N – RED CLOUD: 27-55: It may have been the early season “jitters,” but the girls had trouble putting the ball through the hoop, hitting only 21 percent while Red Cloud hit close to 40 percent. Roy William Arasmith, 74, of Jewell, Kansas, died on Dec. 7, 2024, after an extended battle with cancer. He was born on May 19, 1950, in Beloit, Kansas, to Kenneth Lyle and Noma (Knowlton) Arasmith. Roy grew up on the family farm southwest of Jewell. He attended the Prairie Plain country school (District 24) for five years until it closed, then attended Jewell Grade School and Jewell High School, graduating with the Class of 1968. Matthew “Matt” James Howell, 39, of Formoso, Kansas, died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, at Hilltop Lodge Nursing Home in Beloit, Kansas, surrounded by his family after a brief but courageous battle with kidney cancer. He was born on May 1, 1985, in Salina, Kansas to James and Nancy (Weir) Howell. Matt grew up in Formoso and graduated from Mankato High School in 2003. In January, members of the Superior Board of Education will appoint a new board member to fill the vacancy left by Matt Sullivan. Sullivan’s term expires at the end of 2024. He did not file for reelection. The Superior Chamber of Commerce sponsored a passport contest in association with the Once Upon a Christmas promotion held Friday in downtown Superior. The chamber had originally planned to select one winner of 50 Superior Bucks from the completed passports but the response was so great, the decision was made to select two winners. The winners selected are Brena Garcia and Heather Tyler. The completed passports had to be stamped by each particpating business before being returned to the chamber office. Members of the Superior High School bowling team kicked off their season last Thursday when the took on Araphoe at Superior Bowl. Superior boys won with Braden Wulf scoring the most points. The girls lost. Teagan Cool scored the most points for the Wildcats. Tuesday, the team competed in a bowling dual at McCool Junction. The Superior girls basketball team opened regular season play with a win over Sutton 52 to 32 Thursday evening in Sutton. Last year, Sutton beat the Wildcats 52 to 39. The Superior Wildcats played strong defense and never trailed. At halftime, they were leading 35-24. At one point, during the second quarter, they lead by 18 points.
