    Gloria Schlaefli|Dec 12, 2024

As Christmas nears, thoughts go to Christmas pasts. As a young mother years ago with two young sons that kept me busy, I prepared for Christmas as best I could. Christmas was so exciting but as Christmas drew closer in those days, I learned, as always, my husband and my large families on our mother’s and father’s sides, never gave an inch on Christmas family get-togethers. Both sides set the date for Christmas Day. Thankfully, my father’s side of the family soon decided to move their Christmas get-together near New Year’s, so it worked better...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Dec 12, 2024

A week ago Monday I had two computer parts shipped from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, a suburb of Tulsa. Thankfully, I wasn’t in desperate need of them for they took the long way to Superior. The tracking report indicated from Broken Arrow they went to Tulsa. Instead of heading north from Tulsa they went south to Dallas. They reached Omaha at 6:14 a.m. Friday but they weren’t delivered in Superior until Tuesday. In the 1970s, Superior Publishing was asked to partner with a printer at Henderson to print and mail the Rural Electric Nebraskan mag...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Dec 12, 2024

Phone calls . . . There are still some people around that remember the very early days of phone calls. For us in rural Nebraska that includes “party lines.” Most every ring of the phone was a time of excitement and anticipation. You could even listen in on other calls if you were on a “party line.” Phones are just one example of how much things have changed over the years. I don’t have to go into what all those changes are as everyone is familiar with them. What this is leading up to is all of the phone calls a person receives that they real...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Dec 12, 2024

Q: Does the bible mention anything about transgender people? A: The most important verse to remember in regards to transgender people or anyone else is John 3:16. God has proven his love to the entire world by sending his Son to take the full penalty for our sins and offer us eternal life as a free gift. Other verses to consider are Psalm 16:11 and John 10:10, which tell us that God wants to bless us with abundant life. The guidelines for life we find in the Bible are designed to free us and enable us to live this blessed, abundant life. With...

  • To Borrow or Not to Borrow

    Jeri Shute|Dec 12, 2024

The have-nots usually borrow from those who have. Edward had a no-borrowing policy. He refused to borrow even the smallest thing. From experience, he found out if he borrowed something, for sure it would break, and he would have to repair it and fix it up better than when it came to him. We had a neighbor who liked to “borry.” Edward always had a big shop, well stocked with everything he needed to repair the many mishaps that happen on the farm. “Jim” would come over and “borry” some air from the compressor, and “borry” some tool while he w...

  • Lostcellphoneaphobia

    Nancy Stafford|Dec 12, 2024

A phobia is an irrational fear of something, for example, claustrophobic is an irrational fear of close places and triskaidekaphobia is an irrational fear of the number 13. Therefore, I have lostcellphoneaphobia - an irrational fear of losing my cell phone. This fear extends into a fear of losing my contacts, panic when my phone responds slowly to a command and becoming unhinged when questionable texts randomly appear. To keep my anxiety at a manageable level, I have strict rules for cell phone usage. I leave my phone at a specific spot and...

During the Christmas season, the Twelve Days of Christmas is an oft heard song. But those 12 days don’t really occur until after Christmas. They are the days between Christmas and Epiphany. Epiphany, Jan. 6, being the traditional day, the Three Magi gave the baby Jesus their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. But have you ever considered what the “true love” actually gave? Totally it would have been 12 drummers drumming, 22 pipers piping, 30 lords a leaping, 36 ladies dancing, 40 maids a milking, 42 swans a swimming, 42 geese a layin...
