  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Nov 30, 2023

There was a statement recently shared about grandchildren, “some of the greatest blessings call us Grandma and Grandpa.” Grandparents certainly appreciate and agree with that statement. I know I do. Over Thanksgiving weekend, families and friends came together. That included grandparents with their grandchildren. It brought back precious grandparent memories of our past family times together. Thoughts came to mind of the joy on my grandmother’s face when a new grandchild was placed in her arms as she would rock back and forth, cuddling the l...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Nov 30, 2023

Did you ever get a song caught in your mind and it kept repeating itself over and over all day (or maybe more than a day) in your mind. Maybe it was a thought or phrase or whatever. Well, I recently heard a song and had to look up just when and where it came from. The name of the song is “People are Crazy.” It was written in 2008 and the three lines I keep hearing in my mind were: “God is Great!” “Beer is Good!” “People are Crazy!” I got to thinking: “God is Great.” That is the only one of the three lines that is true without qualificati...

  • Editorʼs Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Nov 30, 2023

Editorʼs Notebook By Bill Blauvelt While my father would later advertise that he offered tankwagon service, that was a misnomer. Dad offered tanktruck service for his bulk delivery tank was mounted on some kind of truck. His earliest Dodge truck was about the size of a modern pickup. As the years passed, the trucks got bigger. His largest, which was never put into service, held 5,000 gallons and was made to be pulled by a semi-tractor. I suspect the 1903 tankwagon had a steel tank mounted on wagon gear pulled by a team of horses or mules. A...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Nov 30, 2023

Q: Does having a church around actually benefit anything? What is it good for? A: That will depend on the church. Churches that are Bible-based, Spirit-filled and faithful will be tremendous blessings to the community they are a part of. Churches that are dead, toxic or legalistic are a heavy drag on the community and a disgrace to the name of Christ. While I am neither a Christian nor a pastor because I believe all churches are perfect, I do believe that faithful churches and Christians have the greatest potential for blessing both...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|Nov 30, 2023

Duke found his voice! I’ve heard him bark, playfully, but he is not typically a vocal pup. My friend, Linda, popped in the other day. Like always, she walked on in. I knew she was there, I heard the door, but it caught Duke off guard. When he barked, I almost jumped out of my skin. He sounds scary! I guess that is what they mean by “his bark is worse than his bite.” I’m feeling a little better, and yes, I may have been feeling a little sorry for myself the past few weeks, but I’m allowed. Life is hard, and when one is not feeling well, it is a...

Purcell said she would begin at once to clean and repair the...

He was the youngest of his four siblings, Joe, Julia and Rene. Trying to keep up with his older brother, Joe, and farm work through the years made Randy a bit of an athlete. • Firearm deer harvest down 18 percent statewide

    Nov 30, 2023

Preliminary results from the 2023 Nebraska November firearm deer season show statewide harvest was down 18 percent from 2022 and down 29 percent from the 2018 to 2022 average. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission expected these results for the Nov. 11 to 19 season based on several factors that indicated a decline in harvest was coming. Lower harvest and deer populations were recorded in 2022 and lead to a reduced number of permits available for 2023. Other factors indicating the decline included: Permits and harvest had increased in 2019 and...
