There are many things to be thankful for this week. Some are major and often recalled but there are minor items we tend to overlook. For example, this week I was reminded to be thankful turn signals are now standard equipment on motor vehicles. I even have turn signals on my three-wheeled electric bike. Memories . . . What do 1962 and 2024 have in common ? ? ? Both years saw the Nebraska Husker Football Team break out of losing seasons and both seasons earned the team a Bowl game. In 1962, Bob Devaney and team took the same team the former coach had and earned a winning record for the season and then played against Joe Namath in the Gotham Bowl in New York City. In 2024 Matt Rhule earned six wins (at this point in the season) which did two things: earned a possible Bowl game and also gave the team the chance to end a period of losing seasons....

The first issue of the Superior Public Schools Alumni Newsletter was distributed electronically to 265 Superior alumni and the search continues to secure the email addresses of additional alumni. The goal is to distribute electronic newsletters several times a year. This isn’t the first such attempt. There have been multiple attempts to build a database of Superior alumni. This week’s winners in the Superior Bucks holiday drawing are Angel Combs, Jon Alrecht, Barb Woerner and Lori Clyde. Just as they did when the Simic Roller Skating Rink first opened on a New Year’s Eve about 40 years ago, volunteers and donors have joined together to prepare for the reopening of the roller skating rink. The rink was closed and building maintenance stopped with the arrival of the COVID pandemic. After being locked up, when the pandemic faded and volunteers checked into reopening, it was discovered the building had not faired well. Five members of the Mankato Garden Club gathered Saturday to decorate 24 pots for Christmas in Mankato. Marlene Brown was the first member to arrive and swiftly organized the members arriving so each person could uniquely decorate the pots with artificial Christmas tree branches, seasonal ribbons, acorns painted white and nice bold touches like lollipop shapes. Ismael Rodriguez, a 44-year-old known around Jewell County as Mae, worked with the Jewell County Health 365 Coalition to create an uplifting mural that can be seen on the south side of the Rural Health Department building just off Highway 36 in Mankato. The Jewell County Commissioners, Keith Roe, Ed Duskie and Brent Beck met on Nov.12, as the Board of County Canvassers. The meeting was opened to canvass the ballots from the Nov. 5, General Election. Jewell County Health Department is preparing to offer classes in the upcoming year in regard to healthy living and chronic disease prevention. Studies show that 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes. Losing weight and being active can reduce the risk by half. The classes use CDC approved curriculum and are taught by a certified instructor. There will be new Christmas decorations for the Catholic Church in Nelson this Christmas, thanks to the people that donated funds and bought baked goods from Barbara Jeffs. Barbara organized a fund-raiser specifically to buy decorations for Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Many people bought homemade goodies or donated funds to her cause. “People from all denominations either bought goodies or donated to the fund-raiser.
