Whether you travel over the country roads, city roads, go short or long distances, or even if you remain at home hosting the family dinner, it is hoped you have a happy and thankful Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving Day may be extra special as family and friends get together, while watching the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade on television, or preparing to take in a great football game. The Thanksgiving meal is a special one and the cook sometimes is the least recognized as several trips are made to the grocery store collecting needed items and the...
Q: Does the commandment: “you shall not bear false witness” apply to gossip? If so, how? A: Fundamentally, the 9th commandment involves communicating what is not true (particularly in a judicial setting), while gossip (in the biblical sense) refers to speech that tears someone down behind their back. So then, gossip would not necessarily fall under the 9th commandment, however since both lying and gossip are sins of the tongue, they often go hand in hand. I only found one occurrence of the word gossip in the Bible (I Timothy 5:13). But oth...
Remembering back to my many Thanksgiving dinners growing up in Superior, I now realize how special they were. Aunt Lena and Aunt Freda, sisters of my father Paul, were regular attendees. Often present was my mother’s sister, Aunt Laura Koon, who lived in Lincoln, Nebraska. At times, we would also have cousin, Willie Jacobs, who rode the Burlington passenger train up from Atchison, Kansas. My mother, Myrtle Schmeling, was a gourmet cook and started preparing this special meal the night before Thanksgiving. We would start with a Jell-O salad w...
Memories . . . Some things we remember forever, others we forget as soon as possible. Sunday, a bad memory came rushing back because of driving to Sunday Mass on a gravel road soaked by about an inch or rain. I forgot what it’s like to drive on gravel roads when they are wet. It all came back to me . . . quickly. However, I did stay out of the ditch and I’m thankful for however much rain fell during these couple of days. As I heard one lady say: “We just couldn’t go into winter without some moisture.” A O A good friend of mine retired a...
Oh my gosh! The last week has been rough! I told you I had depression and fibromyalgia. Well, I started treatment for depression a couple of weeks ago. It was great at first, I had so much energy, I was waking up in the morning feeling rested, and I was getting things done. It felt like I went from being Eeyore to Tigger overnight. It was awesome. Then I started waking up randomly at all hours of the early morning after only sleeping for a few hours, to not being able to go back to sleep. That made for some long days, but I did accomplish...
The 1960s - 1970s: When I was a little youngster, my family of eight (three brothers, three sisters and our parents) would head out to our grandparents’ farm just outside of Bolus, Nebraska. I remember having fun with all of our cousins, playing a game where we would throw a ball over the roof of the grands’ house. This, of course, irritated grandma but it was fun anyway! Occasionally we would also go to visit the other set of grandparents in Summerfield, Kansas. The cousins there were either way older or way younger than all of us but we sti...
This week contains some of the biggest shopping days of the year. Friday, the traditional date for the opening events related to the Christmas Shopping Season is now known as Black Friday and Saturday is being promoted as the day to Shop Small. Superior merchants have special values and activities planned for both days. Because of the slow down in mail service, many of those merchants placed their Black Friday and Shop Small advertising in the last issue of The Express. Some have chosen to repeat the same advertising in this issue. When making...
Jennifer Cady, the Superior Schools secondary principal, apparently has been absent from school in recent days and rumors about her absence have been flying. One of those rumors indicated she was on suspension and may have been fired. The Express contacted John Whetzal, the district’s superintendent of schools, to inquire about the rumors. We received the following reply, “None of them are true, but unfortunately, I cannot comment on anything regarding personnel matters. It is nothing egregious and nothing that placed any student in dan...

We have much to be thankful for. Today we are reminded about a story from 1886 that we shared in this newspaper several years ago. That year the editor of a Jewell County newspaper lambasted a number of men who failed to attend the community Thanksgiving service. Among those listed was Jerome Berry, however, the editor gave Mr. Berry a little leniency and said, he was forgiven for not going to church as he was still drying out after being tossed into a well. And now for the rest of the story. Jerome Berry was at Jim Mizener’s place, standing at...

I enjoyed Saturday’s spring-like weather and appreciate the rain which followed but I am not looking forward to the colder temperatures and the possibility of snow which conclude the forecast for this week. That might be different if I had plans to put up ice. There was a time when putting away ice was a regular winter activity. Recently while reading an issue of the Ruskin Leader published in 1923, I came across a story distributed by the University of Nebraska Extension Service which advised every farm should have an ice house and farmers sho...
A homegrown rural Kansas newspaper is connecting with people across the nation and beyond. Fred Smith is the publisher of the Tipton Times. In 1991, the Smiths moved back to Tipton from west Chicago to provide a safe, secure, small-town family environment for their children. They bought the Tipton Grocery and expanded it through the years. In fall 2023, they sold the grocery store to a local woman’s grandson and his wife. “I probably could have sold it sooner but I really wanted to keep it local,” Smith said. The new owners will be the fifth...
Travelers will hear and see numerous transportation safety messages during the holidays. The primary theme is simple: Buckle Up. Every Trip. Every Time. The Kansas Drive to Zero Traffic Deaths Coalition (DTZ) reminds motorists that heavy traffic over the extended Thanksgiving weekend makes this one of the busiest travel times of the year. Nine people died and 19 more sustained serious injuries in Kansas roads during the 2022 Thanksgiving holiday period, according to Kansas Department of Transportation stats. “Most traffic-related fatalities and...

Last Tuesday, 56 community members gathered at the Nelson Community Center for the annual Thanksgiving dinner. This was more than had been served in the past few years! Thank you to all who attended and brought in delicious side dishes to go with the traditional turkey meal! The Lost Needle Quilters, with the financial help of the Senior Citizens group, prepared the mainstays of the meal – meat, potatoes and gravy, dressing and rolls and guests brought in the side dishes. After a welcome by R...
Construction . . . Renovation . . . Restoration/Mitigation . . . Three or four words on the minds of a lot of Lawrence area residents along with Lawrence area natives, friends and relatives. The construction concerns are primarily with the proposed building of a community center for the village while the renovation, restoration and mitigation concerns deal with the ongoing restoration effort and recent fire at the Sacred Heart Church. A brief rundown on each project. Community Center: The...

Each box is filled with love which opens the child’s heart to hear about Jesus’ love. About three out of every five children who receive a shoebox com...
Today was a truly heartwarming day for me and I want to share with you the inspiring actions of young people I witnessed. After a church service that included many messages of thanksgiving, hubby and I motored to Hastings for lunch and to pick up a few needed items. Two young men, probably in their very early 20s, were seated across from us at lunch, and I could not help but overhear a portion of their conversation. One young man was recounting that he had changed his lifestyle and did not connect with many of his old friends, but that he...
Veterans, their families and friends, were served a delicious meal at the Nelson American Legion on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11. The meal was prepared and served by members of the American Legion Auxiliary. Following the meal, the group viewed a powerful Veterans Day video that outlined the astounding number of wartime and conflict deaths and injuries. In addition, there are an untold number of service men and women who remain missing in action or unidentified. Veterans present introduced themselves and told their Branch of Service, number...
