  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Jan 26, 2023

Happy Birthday, Kansas, on your 162nd year! Proud to say that you are the only state I’ve ever lived in and wouldn’t change that for anything. Kansas is smack dab in the middle of the United States. Some say it’s boring driving through Kansas on the interstate roadways but it really isn’t. Yes, there are acres and acres of rolling plains, but there are also the Monument Rock formations made of limestone rocks, and the grassy rolling hills termed the Flint Hills. There are the many lakes, creeks and rivers over the state. Trees once were no...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Jan 26, 2023

Wylie Jensen stopped by the newspaper office with a nearly perfect 7 ounce pop bottle found while cleaning up the area where a corn crib was once located. The bottle would have been in like new condition had not the screen printed label been scratched when scraped by a skidsteer loader bucket. The inscription on the bottle indicated it had been bottled in Superior. The bottle had been filled with a lemon-lime drink named Sparkling Life. I surprised Wylie when I remembered when the Blauvelt...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Jan 26, 2023

Icicles . . . Gosh, haven't used that term for quite some time in the past few years. Duane Brockman had a nice picture of icicle with a barn in the background on Facebook last week. Then, with a little melting and freezing of the ice and snow on the roof of our house, an icicle (on steroids) formed right in the middle of our front porch as can be seen in the picture. There is more than seven feet from the floor to the roof and this icicle covers over half of that. Yup, our 'January Thaw' came...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa L Bruce|Jan 26, 2023

We all know by now that I’m not fond of winter, but this blanket of white mother nature draped over everything sure is pretty. It’s a less depressing landscape to gaze upon, at the very least. I feel for those who have to work out in the weather. I don’t know how they do it; I can’t seem to keep warm inside fully dressed. I dread going out, and out is where I long to be. Only two more months until spring! I was supposed to have the annual mammogram on Wednesday, the day of our big snowstorm. To be on the safe side, I rescheduled it for Friday....

  • Vestey Festival needs more volunteer participation in 23

    Bill Blauvelt|Jan 26, 2023

“The Reel Story — Let the Memories Roll” is the tentative theme for Superior’s 2023 rendition of the Lady Vestey Victorian Festival. The theme honors a former Vestey Festival chairman and one of Superior’s biggest boosters, the late Lew Hunter. Hunter died earlier this month of COVID related complications. His cremains are being returned to his home area and many of his friends and family members are expected to be here for Memorial Weekend. The plans are still coming together but the family plans a public dance in his honor that weekend a...

  • Irrigation District planning diversion dam near Superior

    Jan 26, 2023

A letter distributed this week to irrigators served by the Superior Canal reported the Bostwick Irrigation District in Nebraska is now considering the construction of a Republican River Diversion Dam and pumping station to be located south of the Aurora Cooperative’s Superior East elevator. The water taken from the river will be pumped into the Superior Canal about one-half mile east of Superior. The district letter said this will result in a large water savings due to losses currently incurred by running water from the Harlan County Reservoir...

  • Officer joins police force First day was Tuesday

    Jan 26, 2023

Apparently, the residents of Superior are not objecting to an ordinance change that will mandate each residence subscribe for trash removal service. If the ordinance is adopted, the charge will be part of the property’s monthly utility bill. At the start of Monday night’s council meeting, there was a public hearing at which residents could speak either in support of or in opposition to the proposed ordinance change. Only two residents of the community spoke and neither opposed the change. One asked what the monthly charge would be and the oth...

  • They didn't miss school one bit

    Jan 26, 2023

Last Wednesday, when it appeared school would probably be called off on Thursday, Kent and Katelyn Duffy invited their friends to gather at the Duffy farm near Guide Rock for a sledding party. ATV's were used to pull sled-type devices while others tried their sleds on the Duffy farm hills. The youngsters occasionally got a face full of snow when rides didn't go as planned and unless things have changed since this writer was a boy, they probably went home with wet clothes. However, we expect...

  • Statehood out of wars and conflict

    Gloria Schlaefli|Jan 26, 2023

The story of Kansas as it became a state of the United States of America is much like a page out of today's conflicts, voting controversies and hardships. Kansas had its start as property of France. In 1903, a treaty was made with President Thomas Jefferson to purchase the Louisiana Territory from France. This included Kansas lands. Kansas had been named after the Kansas River, that in turn had been named after the Native America Tribe of Kansas, meaning, "people of the wind." Jefferson decided...

  • A wedding can create interest in economic development

    Jason Tuller|Jan 26, 2023

By the time this column gets published, my daughter will be married. That got me thinking about weddings as economic development and people attraction. When I was married 20 years ago, I did the same thing my daughter is doing. I was married in the town where my future spouse was living. Fortunately, that was close to where my family was from. The only cost to attend was the drive. In my daughter’s case, we will not only have a long drive but a stay in a hotel as well. In order to help with final wedding plans and to have a bit of a C...
