Tuesday morning’s Omaha World-Herald contained a story about Duane Hansen, a Nebraska man who paddled a pumpkin 37.5 miles down the Missouri River and qualified for a spot in the Guiness Book of World Records. The previous record was 25.5 miles. The Omaha paper reported Hansen rode a hollowed-out 846-pound pumpkin from Bellevue to Nebraska City. The trip took him 11.5 hours. Now he wants to grow a pumpkin large enough that he and his daughter can ride down the river together. I’ve ridden some strange things and seen some strange things use...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|Nov 10, 2022

In a week, I’ll be in San Diego! It seems crazy to me this is really happening! I can’t believe we actually pulled it off. Jacob, here we come! Man, I miss that kid! Robert called today. He is packing and getting ready to move to his new duty station. We moved a lot during his childhood, and he seems to have blocked that horror from his mind because he complained about how hard it was. I just laughed and said, “If you think moving out of your barracks is hard, wait until you have an entire house to pack.” Robert has been a bit of a pack ra...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Nov 10, 2022

Seems like “Deja vu all over again,” as Yogi Berra like to say. I’m talking about our trip home from Hastings last Wednesday afternoon. We were still a ways north on Show Boat Road when we saw a dark cloud hugging the earth east-southeast of Lawrence. It was darker than other clouds in the sky and seemed to be coming from a specific place. We thought maybe we were seeing a repeat of that prairie fire of just several weeks ago. We watched it all the way home as it seemed dust and smoke were being blown northeast. Once in Lawrence we notic...

  • Case displays veteran's medals

    Sandra Foote|Nov 10, 2022

To see this individual around town, doing his daily activities, you may never know what extraordinary things he has done in his past. That can be said of many people, but this man is a hero to the United States of America. John Combs was drafted in April of 1968 and honorably discharged from the United States Army in January 1970. We think of the Vietnam Conflict as the Vietnam War. Actually, the Vietnam Era is considered a Peace Time effort. It was considered a police efforts and never...

  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Nov 10, 2022

It’s Veteran’s Day! There is nothing more stirring to the heart then watching a group of veterans as they carry the American Flag to start off a parade. Some of these local marching veterans wear their military uniforms others wear the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars’ outfits. As Will Rogers was quoted about such a moment, “We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.” Some of those standing on the street curb, place their hand over their heart. Men remove their caps, and some chose to re...
