I have a sign hanging in my laundry room picturing an older pickup with the saying above it, “Many of My Favorite Memories Come From Some Old Dirt Road.” It got me to thinking of how in the last Country Roads I shared about the limestone rock that now covers many of our Jewell County roads. There was a time before that when a lot of the country roads were country dirt. I must admit some of the rides on the dirt roads were not exactly my “favorite,” but they do have a story to tell. As a farmer’s daughter, the main country road covered w...
Elsewhere on this page, Gloria Schlaefli writes about her memories of the country roads of our youth. While we were raised in different parts of Jewell County, our roads were much the same and we share similar experiences. The biggest difference is the location of our childhood homes. Mine was on a highway that was hard-surfaced when I was three-years-old. That wasn’t Gloria’s case. The best she’s ever had is gravel or ground limestone surfacing. The country roads were challenging at times and other times they could be fun. I suspect it was a...
November 8, 2022 . . . Election Day. That’s right, a day so many of us set aside every two years to go and vote. However, it seems to me the importance of that day has diminished somewhat over the years. I attribute some of the changes in attitude towards voting to this thing called “Early Voting.” We are now about three weeks plus a few days away from that November 8 election day. Every state in the nation will be voting that day. As I understand it, however, some states are now allowing voters to start voting already with their “Earl...
It’s been yet another crazy week, hence the title. We no longer have holes in our front porch, and the priming of the house has begun. I’m running out of days to paint, but I am hopeful the front porch area will be completed by the end of the month. It’s been so long since I picked out the paint colors that I was pleasantly surprised when I got them out of storage and took a peek. By fixing the front porch floor, George acquired about three square feet of extra space in the barn. That was not exactly what he was hoping for, LOL! He is now w...
Bobbi Pettit of Five Rule Planning, reviewed the results of the Superior Parks and Recreation Survey at the Superior Public Library meeting room last Wednesday with only a handful of people present. Superior has come a long way in the past 12 years, she said. “When I first started working with the city, we were debating whether or not tires could be piled in a front yard. Today as we entered town, we said ‘Wow, look at that new sidewalk.” A goal of the survey has been to develop a 10 year plan, to prioritize which items are most impor...

Presenting biblical answers to tough questions Q: What is a spirit? Is it different from your soul? A: I might compare the terms “soul” and “spirit” to the terms “morals” and “ethics.” The two words can overlap in meaning and be basically synonymous (compare John 12:27, with John 13:21 for example). However, at other times they are distinct in usage and differences can be drawn between them (I Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 4:12). Fundamentally, the word “spirit” is drawn from Hebrew and Greek words with the sense of wind or breath; something t...
