It’s time for a Pumpkin Palooza! Pumpkins are everywhere and ready for either decorating, carving or eating. They are grown in colors such as light green, white, blue and of course the usual orange. This time of the year, the pumpkins are seen everywhere including on porches, in yards, on sidewalks and in the house displayed on tables and shelves. They are on display in stores, on trailers and in front of specialty shops, all offering the pumpkins of all shapes and sizes for sale. Speaking of sizes, the record for the largest pumpkin was set a...
This week newspapers throughout the United States are celebrating the 84th annual National Newspaper Week. As part of the observance the National Newspaper Association has asked us “old boys” to share stories about why we are in the newspaper business. And when it comes to the “old boy” designation, I certainly fit. I’ve been sitting in this newspaper’s editor’s chair for more than 54 year and I’ve been telling stories for more years than that. I’m not sure when I started but one my earliest memories is of a story I told dates back to whe...
Q: I recently lost someone close to me. Where can I find words of comfort in the Bible? A: It may not be easy for me to offer a satisfying answer to this question since grief can affect all of us in different ways. The best I can do is offer general guidelines and resources for grief, then list specific passages for various situations. I hope it helps. One beneficial source of comfort to us in times of grief is our relationships with others. Friends, family, a pastor or a wise fellow believer can provide support and encouragement. The Bible sha...
Recently I attended the Nebraska Press Women’s fall convention. Looking over the slate of presenters, I was not overly interested in the subject matter, but I relished the chance to network with fellow journalists. I hooked up to my camper and headed out early Friday morning for a Nebraska State Park close to the convention venue. I had no trouble finding the park, getting a site and setting up my camper. All was going well by Saturday morning but, knowing my luck, I headed out early just in case. Sure enough, I took a wrong turn inside the p...
“Election Tampering” is often thought of as something that happens on Election Day to affect the outcome of the election. However, “Tampering” can come in many forms. The Heritage Foundation just released a news item concerning voter registration in Arizona. The Daily Signal reported the following: “Arizona has 218,000 voters who can’t prove citizenship.” The Arizona Secretary of State made the announcement last week, but still had not sent the information down to the local election officials who have to deal with the public. I still don’t k...

The fire risk was so high on Saturday that some fire departments encouraged farmers in their area to halt harvesting activities. The departments said, if called, they might not have enough equipment or man power to respond.Residents were evacuated from a nursing home at Adams when a wildfire threatened. The Hardy and Superior departments responded to a fire about five miles south of the Hardy along Republic County’s Fir Road. While some members of the Superior department were assisting with that northwest Republic County fire, the department w...
Now in its 22nd year, Superior’s popular Candy Cane Lane is in trouble. Many of the early supporters of the program are no longer able to do the work of setting up and taking down the popular Lincoln Park display. In the past year, one of the spark plugs died and another is taking chemo treatments and unable to do the work he once did. Both also served as board members. The result is an immediate need for volunteers. A public meeting has been scheduled 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the Superior Public Library meeting room. People interested i...

Improvements continue to made at the Wildcat Community Track located west of Superior High School. Earlier this year a donation from Horizon Bank made it possible to complete the last phase in the track's restroom construction project. That project was begun by Connie Hayes soon after the track was built. The grandmother saw the need for restrooms at the track and undertook to raise the funds needed to add the amenity. They were built and opened but at that time there was only sufficient funds...
Here in the center of the United States, we have to worry about tornadoes and even earthquakes but we can take comfort in knowing hurricanes don’t come this far inland. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t worry about friends living in the path of hurricanes. Following Hurricane Helene, a former resident of this area, Gale Rathbun, forwarded to The Express an article written by a man who apparently was living in the area devastated by Helene. He did an admirable job of describing what happened and why. We have prepared his story for publi...

8 points in a football game? Yup, that's correct. It is pretty rare, but it does happen . . . and not by design. This reporter took a quick look back at the Raider scoring for the past 10 years and found only one game where the point total was 80 points or more. That was in 2018 when 96 points were scored. In those 10 years, there were four times when the Raiders scored in the 70 point range. No, I don't think scoring 80 points was a target for the Raiders, they just happened. Coach Blevins...
Lawrence had the benefit of a group of veteran blood donors in Friday's Red Cross Bloodmobile visit to Lawrence. With their leadership, the visit exceeded the Red Cross goal and put another 45 units of blood products into the system for the Red Cross. Then the High School Homecoming week activities involved many...
