    The Lawrence-Nelson High School volleyball team went 4-2 for their past six matches improving their record to 6-11. The Raiders fell to Thayer Central at Lawrence last Tuesday, 16-25 and 11-25, in a triangular match hosted by Lawrence-Nelson. The Raiders swept Fillmore Central, 25-15 and 25-19, in two sets.     The Rock Hills High School cross country team competed at the Belleville Invitational Thursday. The boys team took home first place in the boys varsity 5K race. The junior varsity boys team also finished in first place. Trystn Reynolds led the Grizzlies with his fourth place finis. Kobi Bowers was in eighth place. Spencer Lindberg brough home 10th place.     The Rock Hills High School volleyball team continue their torrid run. They ran their consecutive win streak to 16. The Grizzlies hosted St. John’s-Tipton and Lakeside at Mankato last Tuesday. They avenged an early season loss to St. John’s with a two-set, 25-20 and 25-17 , sweep. They put away Lakeside, 25-6 and 25-10, in two sets to improve to 19-1 for the season.     The Rock Hills High School football team saw their three game winning streak halted, 60-12, when they ran into the Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs at Sylvan Grove Friday. Sylvan Grove got off to a fast start taking a 24-12 lead after the first quarter. The Grizzlies had no answers on offense or defense as they trailed 46-14 at the half. Sylvan-Lucas added 14 points in the third quarter when the mercy rule was invoked and Rock Hills was left with its first loss of the season, 60-12.     Andrew John Pumphrey was born Jan. 16, 1986, the fourth of five children to Paul and June (Baird) Pumphrey. He was baptized at St. John's Catholic Church.     Max Virgil McMains died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. He was born in Superior, Nebraska, on July 14, 2008, to Nate and Tessa (Core) McMains. He was the middle child with two brothers, Mason and Morgan. Max grew up in Burr Oak, Kansas, and attended school at Rock Hills in Mankato.     The Lawrence-Nelson High School football team dusted off the Deshler Dragons at Lawrence Friday and improved their record to 3-2 with the win. Wyatt Frey completed 13 of 17 pass attempts for 174 yards and four touchdowns. Kolten Menke snagged seven passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns.     The Nuckolls County Knights Middle School football team dropped their first game of the season at Brodstone Memorial Field last Monday. The team is a co-op program with Superior and Lawrence-Nelson. It was a hard fought contest with Deshler edging the Knights 28-20.     David Warren Eberhart, age 78, was born in Beloit, Kansas, on Aug. 1, 1946. He died Sept. 27, 2024. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Jewell and graduated from Jewell Rural High School in 1964. He took the bus to Kansas City and joined the US Marine Corps the day after graduation.     The Superior High School Wildcats earned win number two of the season with their 41-21 win over the Fillmore County Panthers at Brodstone Memorial Field Friday. Superior and Fillmore Central were tied 14-14 at the half-time break. The Wildcats came out reenergized for the third quarter and put 14 more points on the scoreboard while their defense held the Panthers scoreless.     It was a successful few days for the Superior High School volleyball team. They won all four of their matches while taking over second place in the wildcard point standings. The Wildcats pulled out a 3-2 win over the Fairbury Jeffs at Fairbury Thursday. The C 1 Jeffs sported winning record. Superior prevailed in a hard played match, 22-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-21 and 15-13.     The Superior High School cross country team competed at the Franklin Invitational run over the Franklin Golf Club course last Tuesday.
