The Lawrence-Nelson volleyball team split their two matches at the Harvard triangular last Tuesday. The Raiders swept, 25-16 and 25-11, in two sets, the hapless and winless Harvard Cardinals. The Kenesaw Blue Devils swept the Raiders, 13-25 and 25-27, in two sets. The Shelton Bulldogs proved to be no friendlier as they swept the Raiders, 17-25, 17-25 and 14-25, in three sets at Shelton Thursday. The funeral for James “Jim” Johanek, age 71 of Cawker City, will be at 10 a.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 26) at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Esbon. Mr. Johanek died Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Osborne County Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Angie; children, Taneasha Eckstrom, Andrea Morris, Zediah Timmons; six grandchildren; brother, Ron Johanek of Esbon; and sisters, Sharon Bergman of Smith Center, Nancy Stortz of Glen Elder, and Tracy Decker of Smith Center. Hastings resident, Michael W. Harig Sr., 74, died Sept. 9, 2024. Michael was born Oct. 5, 1949, in Superior, Nebraska, the son of Donald A. and Mary M. (Strauss) Harig. He graduated from Superior High School with the Class of 1968 and attended CCC in Hastings. Mich- ael married Esther P. Schneider on May 18,1985, in Hastings. He retired from Thermal King and went to work at Menards. He was a volunteer fireman for departments in Fairfield, Superior and Hastings. Harold Eugene Soper, 80, the son of Vern Wesley and Opal (Norwood) Soper, was born March 7, 1944, at Superior. He died Sept. 15, at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior. Harold received his formal education attending school at Bostwick and graduated from the Hardy High School. He was employed for a period of time with Ideal Cement in Superior and then on Oct. 28, 1965, he enlisted to serve his country during the Vietnam War and served until his discharge on June 10, 1966. Gregory K. Johnson, died in Frisco, Texas, on June 26, 2024. He was born on March 19, 1950, in Concordia to Herbert and Dorthy (Green) Johnson. After graduating from Courtland High School in 1968, he attended Fort Hays State University and ultimately graduated with distinction from UMKC School of Dentistry in 1976. Upon graduating from dental school, Greg married Mary Ann Head in Corpus Christi on Nov. 19, 1976.
