Where did the summer go? In just a few days, autumn will arrive. You’d think with this summer being so hot and with a lack of rain, it would seem like summer drug by but for some of us, it somehow flew by. Autumn arrives with football and volleyball games, bon fires along with wiener roasts, tasty s’mores, pumpkins, apple pies baking, leaves turning colors and falling to the ground, cooler days and nights and colorful mum flowers blooming. There are golden brown fields full of milo, stalks of ripened corn, golden soybean fields and com...
This week I looked through what was once the main entrance to Brodstone Memorial Hospital but it didn’t look the same. I didn’t see a Gray Lady sitting in the hall welcoming visitors and giving directions. Neither of the Jeans were in the office. When I first started visiting the hospital, Gene Steele was probably the only woman working in the office, a position she held for 25 years. Later Jean Linn shared office duties. I think my advisor was pulling my leg but I remember being told that to work in the Brodstone office one had to be nam...
I almost feel guilty telling a friend who lives not more than 10 miles from Lawrence that we got about 2.5 inches of rain Friday. She replied: “Ya, we got almost ten hundredths of an inch.” Rainfall sure differs this year. The western part of Nebraska (the Panhandle and area) seems to be receiving the most rain when they are usually shorted any rain that falls. Speaking of rain,t Friday was surely a day most all folks around Lawrence and south received with joy as reports of as much as 2.75 inches of rain fell. Many folks were also anxious for...
On the road again, but unlike Willie, we aren’t having much fun. Another trip to Omaha to see George’s doctor this time. Ever since his surgery, he has felt like he had a lump in his throat, so it was decided he needed to visit his surgeon again. They stuck the camera up his nose and looked down his throat and everything seems to be healing just fine, so it was decided to wait it out a bit and see if the problem corrects itself. We go back in December. We got over whatever ick we had. Fingers crossed that being sick for a week means we will sta...
Q: How are farmers supposed to take comfort in a God that let their entire year of effort burn up? A: I sympathize with the frustration behind this question. When we put so much work and heart into something we expect it to pay off and work out. Our natural sense of justice tells us that hard work ought to be rewarded and, in a year like this, when reality falls far below our hopes and expectations, it is normal to feel disappointed. I want to reassure you God’s Word does offer comfort and reassurance to Christians in circumstances like t...
For Brodstone Healthcare, four years of planning and construction culminated in recent days in a series of open houses to show off the progress. This week departments are being relocated to their new quarters and work will begin soon to remodel the older quarters. In the first 40 yeas or so there was little change to the hospital facility gifted by Lady Vestey in memory of her mother. But in the 50 plus years since the hospital has had a construction project underway much of the time. The latest...

Last May 7, thirty people gathered together for the first time as a new congregation at Superior Estates Winery. They didn’t have a pastor, but had someone coming from Beloit, and they had faith that God would provide a way! They chose the name Risen Life Fellowship Church after departing from the United Methodist Church and applying to become a Global Methodist Congregation after many differences of theological beliefs, including disagreeing with Bishop C. Joseph Sprague in his book “Affirmations of a Dissenter” held he didn’t believe that Je...

It is set to expire on Aug. 31, 2024. This past January, they hired me to oversee and help them navigate this de-unification and prepare both districts to be independent districts again, beginning with the 2024-25 school years. There are many things that need to be done to prepare for this. Road Map - The De-Unification of the SCUD No. 5 is arguably the first of its kind...

The Blue Hill announcer proclaimed the game to be part of the "Boarder War" between the two neighboring schools. Some were saying the local boys had an easy win as they judged the game by the final score. Well, they were wrong as...
