    Throughout the year, Robyn Menke elementary cook, and Janie Corman, middle-high school cook, provide locally raised beef two days a week for the students. The Lawrence-Nelson Beef @ School committee alternates between the elementary and middle-high school every month to educate about beef and grill hamburgers for the students. Another activity the beef donations provide is for the senior class to have a special steak meal on their last day of school.     Chapter J met Sept. 9 at the home of Teri Oltmans with Sandra Sterkel serving as co-hostess. Focus of the evening was the various projects of P.E.O. These include the Educational Loan Fund, International Peace Scholarships, Program for Continuing Education, Scholar Awards and STAR Scholarships.     Thirty-two golfers came out Sunday for the Two Couple Scramble Tournament to finish out the 2024 golf season at the Lawrence Country Club. Winners in the championship flight were the team of Dale and Tami Kohmetscher and Keith and Carolyn Kohmetscher with a 2-round total of 57.     Leslie Vaughn Rose, 86, the son of Pete and Grace (Degener) Rose, was born Aug. 12, 1938, at Rosemont. He died at his home in Riverton Sept. 11. Les received his formal education attending rural schools and the Eckley High School. A veteran of the United States Army, he enlisted on Nov. 27, 1957, and served his country until his discharge on Sept. 1, 1959.     A sluggish first quarter did nothing to deter the Rock Hills Grizzlies as they roared back for a 66-16 over the Thunder Ridge Longhorns at Mankato Friday. Rock Hills trailed 8-0 at the end of the first quarter. They made some adjustments on offense while tightening up the defense. The result was a 28-16 lead at the half.     It was a tough three days for the Rock Hill crosss country team as they competed in two meets. This allowed little time for rest and recovery. The team competed at the Washington County Invitational meet Thursday and the Wamego Invitational Saturday. The Washington meet featured mild hill with warm and windy weather conditions.     Once again it was a tale of two halves. For the first two quarters, Superior and Cross County played to a 6-6 tie at Stromsburg Friday. Defensive lapses in the third quarter allowed the Cougars to open up a 20-6 lead after three quarters.
