Looks like the “Dog Days of Summer” are extending. Reports say officially the Dog Days begin the last of July and continue on into August. This saying was originated years ago and has to do with the Romans and Greeks, noting a certain star alignment. All I know is as far as many are concerned, August has always been noted as a month to deal with concerning hot temperatures. Lately it hasn’t been a good last couple of months for farmers and ranchers in the area. Temperatures have been easily and regularly reaching up into the 100s or the high...
When I first was married, food and shelter were of the highest priority and I had to quickly learn to stretch a dollar. Shelter was fairly easy because our apartment rent was very low. By taking simple steps like turning off lights and putting on a sweater in the winter, I was able to keep the utilities in check. These were all habits I had brought with me from home. Food was a different story. Mom had provided meals at home and in college I participated in their meal plan. Presto! Food appeared in front of me and I ate it. Now, however, I...
In my growing up years, I often had to wear hand me down things. I didn’t have older siblings but that didn’t mean my frugal mother didn’t have other sources. From a deceased Great Uncle Ed, I got two pairs of high top shoes made of kangaroo leather. They were super soft and great for his arthritic feet. My young feet didn’t know to appreciate them and I didn’t want to wear “old man’s shoes.” They were costly then but today I doubt they can even be bought. Last January an international campaign was launched proclaiming, “Kangaroos Are...
Q: What’s the point of going to church just to get a lecture from a pastor who’s just as much a sinner as I am? A: Friend, your question makes me wonder if you haven’t spent time sitting under some unhealthy teaching. If this is so, it saddens me; because, as a pastor and a Christian, I want people to know the life-changing power contained in Christ, the gospel, and the Bible. There is certainly no value in forcing yourself to sit through a lecture you are not getting any benefit from. However, there can be great value in sitting under the teac...
“Technology” and “Paperless Society.” Remember those two ideas that were so popular about 25 years ago? As technology in the forms of computers and social media came into being, the population was being sold on the virtues of a “paperless society.” I really wonder if that paperless idea ever came into being. I’ve read where the production of the common 8 1/2 x 11 paper has grown beyond expectations 25 years ago. It seems “everyone wants a copy” of most everything sent paperless. I’m guessing government regulations also play into this growth in...
Superior residents may have noticed a hive of mechanical activity on Central Avenue south of Third Street. The array of equipment is part of a groundwater remediation project. Harold's Auto Service is located at the southwest corner of Third and Central. Before Harold Kramp established his business, the site was a Conoco service station for many years. Before that, it was one of the earliest gasoline stations in Superior. At some time the underground fuel tanks deteriorated. The leaked fuel...

He taught a welding course this summer at Deshler Public Schoo...

On Monday afternoon the Southeast Power Pool, the agency which supervises the distribution of electrical energy in this area, issued a Level 1 Emergency Alert. In Level 1, there is sufficient electrical power to meet the immediate load requirement but not enough backup resources should the demand increaxse. Should the alert move to the second level, the power pool anticipates it will be necessary to interrupt power supplies. The power pool serves most of Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas with limited responsibility in many of the...
We haven't seen an official analysis of this summer's temperatures, but some people believe we have had a cooler than normal summer with the exception of a few extremely hot days. Among the exceptions were Saturday through Monday when the area was trapped in a bake oven. Many area swimming pools were closed but the one at Hebron was open both Saturday and Sunday and was probably packed for private pools were certainly being used. Sunday afternoon, an Express reporter returning to Superior from...
Monday evening’s Superior City Council was short and sweet. The meeting was opened and closed within a 20 minute time frame. Not the shortest ever but certainly one of the shortest. Council members Levi Gunn and Carrie Lemke were absent. Members accepted Garvin Tucker’s electric department resignation and approved advertising for a replacement. Grant Peterson’s application to return to the Superior Volunteer Fire Department was accepted. The airport levy request tabled at the previous meeting on Aug. 12, was approved without dissent. The bid f...
The South Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) reports more mosquitoes from the health district have tested positive for West Nile virus. According to Michele Bever, SHDHD health director, symptoms of West Nile illness are usually mild, including fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes swo...

Yes, the pelicans have returned to Lovewell Lake. This photo was shot from the dry boat ramp in the cabin area. Pelicans lined the north shore and also fished from what will soon become an island directly to the south. A long-time lake observer said, "The lake had more water in it than I expected." Sometimes by late August huge mudflats can been seen from the shore line. Often it seems people leave with the beginning of school and the pelicans return to fish and rest for the remainder of the...
The post office in Cody seems a logical starting place in search of answers to a Sandhills mystery. The postmaster lifts her gaze from sorting bills and ads soon to be delivered to the community of 154 people. She can't speak with authority about the town's history. But she knows who can. Walk next door to the Husker Hub, she instructs. Table closest to the salad bar. There a woman with white hair tightly curled above her glasses sits chewing her cheeseburger. Rocky Richards, a recently retired...
Producers of north central Kansas are studying their 2024 wheat yields and making selections for their 2025 wheat crop. Post Rock Extension District was fortunate to have had five wheat demonstration plots around the district with one of them the KSU performance “replicated” trials that were planted four times in one location. “We are fortunate to have very special cooperators around the district who are willing to put in the extra time to provide local data for producers of north central Kansas,” according to Sandra Wick, crop product...

Because of problems with theft and vandalism, the City of Nelson has locked the public restrooms in the community’s Harbine Park. In recent weeks someone has been stealing the facilities’ paper supplies. The first incident was reported on Aug. 8 when a park employee checked the restrooms. He found someone had broken into the toilet paper holder and taken all of the big rolls of paper along with all of the paper towels in the men’s restroom. Normally a key is used to open the holder. It was hoped this was a onetime incident. It wasn’t. And the...
The old saying: “what a difference a day makes . . .” could be convert to “what a difference a year makes . . .” for the L-N Raider Football Team. Both the schedule and the roster has change quite a bit for 2024. That’s not all bad, but could be interesting. • Roster: 22 young men reported for duty this year. Not a lot different than in recent years. However, the makeup of the team did change. The 2023 roster was senior heavy and that contributed to the 2023 record of 7-3. 2024 has four seniors and four juniors on the squad, followed by...
