    The Superior High School football team opens their 20121 season, Friday, when they host the Centennial Broncos at Superior's Brodstone Memorial Field. It is also Parents Night. The team looks to improve on last season's 3-4 mark. Paul Heusinkvelt, head coach, has high expectations for the team as two of their past season losses were by one point.     What the Superior High School cross country team lacks in numbers, it makes up for in experience. The boys team has three seniors, Luka Benjamin, Brett Miller and Gavin Ekstein, returning for the 2021 season. Hunter Mazulla, a freshman, rounds out the boys team. Brayton Meyer, an eighth grader, is the junior varsity team member. Brianna Stricklin and Laci Kirchhoff are the members of the girls team.     The Lawrence-Nelson High School football team will be looking to improve upon last season’s 1-6 record. The Raiders host the High Plains Community Storm at Lawrence, Friday, to open the 2021 season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Head coach Brian Blevins, along with asssistant coaches Jerad Niederklein, Preston Hild, Decker Brown, Kevin Wheel and Ramsey Hurt, have the players motivated for the season.     The Superior High girls golf team is back on the course after a hiatus of several years. Three of the team members played with the boys team in the spring. When the decision was made to field a girls team for the fall, seven went out. The team held a series of fund raisers to purchase equipment such as uniforms, bags and carts. The important, intangible parts came from the members. They practiced over the summer, organized the team and remained focused.     The Rock Hills High School football team has been practicing as they ready for the start of the 2021 season. The team will travel to Clyde, Friday for a pre-season jamboree game at Clifton-Clyde High School. The regular season kicks off, Friday, Sept. 3, at Linn. The team features a new head coach. Sawyer Havenstein takes over the helm as the Grizzlies coach. He will be assisted by Wyatt Flynn and Tycen Higer. Havenstein is looking to have Rock Hills improve upon last season’s 3-5 record.     The Rock Hills High School volleyball team opens their 2021 season with a triangular match against Natoma and St. John’s-Tipton, Tuesday, at Tipton. Tracy Anderes returns as head coach with Megan Duskie serving as assistant coach. The team compiled an 11-17 record last season, their best showing in many years.     Violet Mae Lewis, 89, of Callaway, Neb., died Sunday, Aug. 22, at the Callaway Good Life Center. Violet was born March 17, 1932, in her parents’ home on the family farm between Mankato and Burr Oak, Kan., in Jewell County. Her father was Elmer Elsworth Alexander and mother, Florence Isabelle Silsby. She attended a one-room country school (Lamb School) located on the edge of the family farm and graduated from Burr Oak High School with the Class of 1950.     Wayne Allen Reed was born June 9, 1926 to Erma (Hawkins) and Gilbert Ernest Reed on their farm west of Red Cloud, Neb. He died Aug. 5, 2021, at the Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud. Following graduation from the Red Cloud High School, Wayne was drafted into the United States Army. While undergoing basic training in Texas, World War II ended and he was assigned to Army occupation forces in Japan until his discharge in 1946.     Kenneth L. Huber Jr, son of Kenneth L. Huber Sr. and Madalene L. (Weir) Huber was born Oct. 9, 1946, at Concordia, Kan. He died Aug. 11, at his home in Formoso, Kan., at the age of 74. He was a crane operator and construction supervisor for Reece Construction Company and also worked for the State of Kansas Department of Transportation.
