After being off for more than a year, the lights are burning again inside the Superior's former Shopko building. The Shopko signs which had adorned the building have been removed and exterior painting has begun. Tuesday, the doors were open and workers were inside the building apparently preparing it for a new tenant. A mother with young children, River Pavusa, a Superior resident, was hospitalized in Lincoln, Neb., following a one-vehicle accident that happened about 4 p.m. Friday. The vehicle’s only occupant was ejected as the vehicle left the Webber Road on the curve near the Frank Langer resident and overturned. The driver was taken to Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior and then transferred to Lincoln. The cause of the accident is under investigation. South Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) officials reported 11new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases for the past seven days, bringing the total number of cases in the four-county health district to 461. Late Friday brought a storm to Jewell County that left damage in its wake. With high winds and hail, vehicles and buildings received major damage. Windows on the north side of buildings were broken and vehicles were pummelled with large hail. Before the wind and hail, phones went off with an emergency weather alert stating the area was under a tornado warning. Lovewell Reservoir has now been determined to be in a warning. This warning means the lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock and water contact should be avoided. Lovewell State Park hosted its 18th Annual Campground Christmas on Saturday. This year’s event had 12 decorated campsites registered for the contest, with several other nicely decorated campsites that chose not to participate in the contest. The final ladies night for the year was held at the Lawrence Country Club on Aug. 12, with eight women joining in on a beautiful evening. When many people were planting larger gardens this year, Rita and I decided we would attempt to raise more with less. Our plan was smaller but more carefully managed garden space than we have had some years. One of our goals was to use up seed left over from prior years. I had a huge mom fail in the last couple of weeks. My youngest, Jacob, youngest of the second set of kids, is turning 16 in September. We went to do the driving permit thing, and the examiner told me he needed to have his learner’s permit or school permit for six months before getting his driver’s license. Also, a school permit is only good for three months after turning 16 years of age. I don’t remember reading that part when I was going over the rules and regulations.
