The Nelson Community Club 2022 Fun Days were well attended again this year. Twenty-eight runners and walkers entered the Fun Run Sunday morning. Many early risers attended the Breakfast in the Park. Another Nelson tradition, the Washers Tournament, drew 24 two-man teams. Addison McCartney and Parker Trumble held off Mark Porter and Joel DeLeon to win the double elimination tournament. Darlene Helen Medina, 88,of Deshler, the daughter of Carl and Erna (Eilers) Hinz, was born on March 22, 1934, in Nelson. She died Thursday, June 30, at Tabitha Health Care Services in Lincoln, Neb. Darlene grew up outside of Oak, on the Hinz family farm with her parents and eight siblings. Verleen M. Gharring, 100, of Sheridan, Mich., died Thursday, June 30, 2022, at the Laurels of Carson in Carson City, Mich. Originally from Nelson, Neb., Verleen and her late husband, Ivan, moved to the Sheridan area in the late 90s.
