Saturday should have been the 38th running of the Superior FireKracker Run but members of the Superior Jogging Club, the race sponsor, chose not to hold the race because of the health concerns it would have created. In past years, the race has drawn hundreds of people to City Park. It wasn't unusual to have about 300 participants and probably that many or more watchers. Had any of those been COVID-19 spreaders, the air would have been full of the contagious virus. But just because the race was...
Nuckolls County 4-H and FFA fair events are underway but for the first time in history the public is not welcome to attend. Because of the pandemic there will not be food stands, open class exhibits, grandstand shows, commercial exhibits or a midway at this year’s fair. Newspaper photographers and reporters are also noticeably absent from the fairgrounds but that doesn’t mean this newspaper will not publish fair reports. We are working with extension service personnel and believe we are developing a multi-week plan to honor the families tha...
Governor Pete Ricketts rescinded Executive Order 20-05 amending the due date for Nebraskans to renew a driver license or complete vehicle titling and registration requirements. This doubles the amount of notice originally discussed to allow residents to become compliant. Individuals whose driver license, state ID or permit expired on or after March 1, must...

A promise to help a friend who was out-of-town for the weekend with an early morning task got me out and about in Superior earlier than normal on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. My morning jaunts were so interesting I stretched them out a bit longer than was absolutely necessary. Superior was abnormally quiet on both mornings but even more so on Sunday. Were it not for the COVID-19 pandemic, Superior would have been hopping Saturday morning with the 38th running of the Firekracker 10K (sic) and related events. Because of the pandemic, the...

Birthdays of family and friends, complete with the years the event took place. Today, this book is worn and frazzled. It’s lost its hard cover and some of the pages are loose. Now those pages are kept in place with paper clips. As the years...
