With the relaxing of the pandemic regulations, the Southern Nebraska Arts Council is preparing to reopen the Crest Theatre. In keeping with the health directives, the theatre has been closed since March. Plans are to open Friday night with shows planned for 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This week the Whatever Floats Your Boat contest planned for Sunday at the Lovewell State Park beach area joined the long list of activities cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Friday, Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) officials reported one new lab-confirmed COVID-19 case, bringing the total number of cases in the 4-county health district to 310. By county, the totals are 279 in Adams, 24 in Clay, 6 in Webster, and 1 in Nuckolls. The Kansas Department of Transportation has approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects in Jewell and nearby counties. Mission Construction Co. of St. Paul, Kan., received a contract valued at $119,367.64 for signage to be installed on major collector roads of U.S. 36 and west of K-14. It's cherry picking time! The only problem is I don't have any cherry trees to pick from. Several years ago a cherry tree start was ordered from a seed catalog. After selecting just the right spot, the start was carefully planted, watered and tended. I could imagine all the cherries this tree would yield in the future, and all the cherry pies that would be made, but alas. The second year of its growth, the tree died. Delain “Dan” Danehey died unexpectedly on June 2, in Fountain Hills, Ariz. He was born on Sept. 16, 1934, in Lawrence, Neb., the only child of Neil and Caroline (Reiman) Danehey. Dan grew up on the family farm and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1956. He met his future wife, Shelly (Kort) Danehey, in 1955, later marrying her in 1959. After the wedding, he returned to Dover, Del., where he served in the U.S. Air Force. Myrna Pistora of Glasco, died Memorial Day, May 25. She was born May 22, 1930, in Ft. Laramie, Wyo., to Arthur and Amanda (Heinrichs) McAdams. Herbert M. Jeffery, 84, Burr Oak, was born Dec. 5, 1935, in Northbranch. He died June 12, at home in Wichita, after a long struggle with cancer. Herb was the son of Lewis and Esther (Dillon) Jeffery. He attended Union 1, a one-room school house, Burr Oak High School, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture at Friends University in 1962. Walter Gene Wright, 82, of Hastings, formerly of Superior, died Thursday, March 2, 2017, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings. The son of Olive E. (Davis) and Rollin E. Hastings resident, Geraldine Ann (Smith) Wright, 83, daughter of Orin Smith and Florence McLane Smith, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020, at Good Samaritan Village. Paul Allen, 62,the son of Janice M. (Noller) and Donald W. Allen, was born June 14, 1957, at Smith Center. He died June 12, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center.
