Thoughts often take us back to happy times in our youth, with childhood friends and classmates. There were many birthday parties and slumber parties, where several girl friends would get together and have lots of laughs and fun times that will never be forgotten. While taking piano lessons from Mrs. Lackey, while we were living in Stockton, her oldest daughter Peggy was the same age as I was. We hit it off and became close friends. Then my family moved back to Jewell County. As luck would have it, the Lackey family would soon move to Jewell...
This has been a week of both rejoicing and sadness. Thursday morning got off to a sad start when Craig Barfknecht called to report his mother, a longtime employee of this newspaper, had died. Irene was the last living member of the crew that helped Howard Crilly produce this newspaper prior to the arrival of the three Kansas kids in May of 1970. Irene was a lifelong resident of Nuckolls County and I think she questioned if anything good come out of Kansas. She was loyal to her newspaper and fiercely clung to the standards set by her former...
Q: The Bible tells us not to store up treasures on the earth. Does that mean we should never buy anything nice? A: The instruction not to store up treasures on earth comes within a passage of advice from Jesus about money and worries (Matthew 6:19-34). This passage is all about bringing an eternal perspective to our daily needs, resources, and choices. We must remember as Christians that we have an eternal well to draw upon for our needs (vv. 25-30), and we have an eternal life to be living. Since we have been given an eternal existence and...
This week we are writing before the June 6 anniversary of D-Day. Seems the date receives less attention as we get further from 1944 when the invasion of Europe began. In one of the largest battles ever to take place, approximately 135,000 men ended up as casualties, 29,000 killed. We are far removed from June 6, 1944, but our family does have a personal connection to that date. My father-in-law was the co-pilot of a B-17 plane and they flew three missions on that day in support of the invasion. He later was shot down on a mission over Germany...
So we bought a new car. No, I’m not having a midlife crisis, it may look as though I am, but I promise I am not. It’s a Mini Cooper, and it’s red with a white top. It’s a cute little thing with an awful lot of get up and go for a four cylinder vehicle. A few weeks ago I started to worry, what if one of our high mileage vehicles were to give out on us. I really did not want to go down the car payment hole again, but having reliable transportation is a must. I had been looking at Volkswagen Beaeles, but nothing I found met my criteria. I swore I...
Property owners in the City of Superior received innocuous looking yellow postcards in the mail recently. Upon closer inspection, shock set in for most as they viewed the updated valuations. How hefty were the changes? One landowner was informed that a small piece of land, last evaluated at $1,675, was now assessed at $22,240. A shocking increase to say the least. Superior house owners were informed that the land upon which the residence is situated was now valued at a much higher rate. Some examples were an increase in valuation from $1,250...

This group was...
A steady stream of people, many of them children, visited with mountain men at a rendezvous at the Pawnee Indian Museum near Republic, Saturday. Six mountain men had arrived Friday evening and camped overnight near the mound, practicing their survival skills and imaging what it was like for the Indians to live there. Saturday, a steady flow of people chatted with them about the fur trading era in the U.S. from 1800s to 1849, when China captured the world's fur trade with the silk worm. They...
The sound of galloping horses is ringing out this week along the Pony Express Trail from Scramento, California, to St. Joseph, Missouri, as the National Pony Express Association reenacts the service which connected the United States prior to the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The first rider with a mochila full of mail left Old Sacramento at 2 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday). The mail is scheduled to pass through Nevada, Utah and Wyoming before reaching the Nebraska stateline near Lyman at 2:30 p.m. mountain time one week later. If...
The Superior Dollar General store had a new ventilation system installed Saturday when a pickup truckcrashed through the east side of the building. The driver said her foot slipped off the brake pedal as she was parking and landed on the accelerator pedal. The surge of power sent the vehicle through the side of the building leaving a perfectly square opening. The store was open for business at the time. No injuries were reported. The Superior Volunteer Fire department as well as police and...
A barn is under construction at the Nuckolls County Fairgrounds. It will used to house the fair's poultry and rabbits exhibits. It will also be used for the poultry and rabbit show. The location of the building is roughly the same as the old one it replaces. The building, 160 square feet is 20 by 80 feet. This building will have a concrete floor. It is a wood structure with tin siding and roofing and no windows. However, it will have a bird screen two feet below the roof line to provide air...
The Nuckolls County Board of Commissioners met at the county courthouse in Nelson, Monday. The county road department superintendent outlined the priority bridge projects for the upcoming year. It was agreed that the material bid for several of the projects, which will consist of placing tubes rather than bridges, be listed as a bundle for more competitive pricing. The department expects delivery of it’s new loader in the near future. The decision to replace a bridge west of Bostwick was put on hold to ensure the necessary financing was in p...
You may recognize the name Sonny Johnson from his discovery of a Mammoth bone in 2016 when he was just 12 years old. He found the bone while he was out shed hunting (deer antler hunting) about one-fourth mile from his home. He first thought a part of the bone was a rock, but his dad, John Johnson, recognized it as a bone. A palentologist was called. He came from the University of Kansas to help with the excavation. This discovery was one of the inspirations that developed into the Mammoth...

In recent days, the media has reported on the split in the United Methodist Church. The split is real and it has had an impact on all United Methodist Churches in the area. Those reports seem to emphasize human sexuality as the reason for the split. Issues surrounding the LBGTIQIA community are the "presenting symptom" of disaffiliation. Indeed, there are issues with drag queens, homosexual marriages and bishops in practicing homosexual relationships. But, the paragraph of the Book of Discipline...
After 29 years on the job with Rolling Hills Electric Cooperative, Cregg Jeffery has decided to retire. He began his working career for Mid-America Dairymen at Superior. In 1994 he joined the Jewell-Mitchell Rural Electric Association’s tree trimming crew. He later earned his journeyman lineman credentials and retired as a maintenace foreman....
Esbon Community Center received grants from the Jewell County Foundation and Dane Hansen Foundation to help replace old worn out kitchen cabinets at the community center. The expense was not entirely covered by the grants. Some funds received from Roger Underwood Memorial and Delilah Pate Memorial were used to complete the project. On Memorial Day 2023, more than 150 people were served lunch at noon. What a difference it made in the kitchen! No longer were the sink and stove congested, making things go smoothly. Those volunteering in the...

About a month ago members of the Nelson American Legion Post reported 50 pounds of pull tabs collected at the Nelson Legion over an indeterminate length of time had been delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Omaha. At that time, it was also said that for a 25 cent contribution people could make a guess as to the number of tabs needed to make 50 pounds, with the winner to be announced following the Memorial Day Community Dinner. Guesses ranged from a thousand to half a million, but Donna Jensen’s entry of 104,999 came closest to the a...
(Editorʼs Note: We apologize as this report was inadvertently missed.) The Lawrence-Nelson school history is not long in terms of years, but the 2023 L-N Golf Team saw to it that the history of the golfing teams improved, again. The group met at the Nelson Community Center to fill cars and travel to the Nucolls County Museum at Superior where they toured the buildings and were informed by museum staff about the history of many of the artifacts and the donors who contributed to the museum's contents. Even though all agreed that more time could be spent...

The West Point Military Academy in West Point, New York, is the oldest military school in the United States. Like its similar schools for the other branches of the military, being able to attend the school is no small fete. Requirements are tough. Then, if accepted, the ‘wash-out’ rate is high. However, the community of Lawrence now has a connection to the school as a grandson of current Lawrence residents, Dick and Marge Kohmetscher, is now a graduate of the school. Max Kohmetscher was one of a class of 940 graduates and graduated with dis...
