The weekend in this area was filled with celebrations and memorials. Visitors and residents in this area could certainly be kept busy and no one could say they were bored. The annual Vestey Day event was held in Superior and was filled with activities, programs, tours, music, food and a parade. As usual, this celebration did not let the attendees down. The weather was ideal and people of all ages filled the town. In the neighboring town of Mankato, a year ago plans were made on how best to carry out the town’s 150th anniversary during the b...
This writer was among the few who took advantage of the opportunity to visit the Cowboy Museum when it was open during the festival. The museum displays the private collection of Steve Werner, an 80-year-old Superior resident who inherited the collecting bug from his grandmother. When I signed the guest book, best estimates put me at about visitor number 50. In the company of Jim and Mel Rempe, our tour guide was the collector, Mr. Werner. And what a superb guide he was. As he showed us around, we were not only looking at stuff, we were...
Q: God could have forgiven all sins Himself so why did he send his son to a torturous death to forgive sins? A: I can think of at least three things that were accomplished by the Cross that could not have been accomplished any other way. First, sin was publicly and fully punished. We have in the gospels a record of the severity of sin and the kind of punishment it warrants. Even though we do not have to suffer that penalty, the fact that the punishment was meted out to Christ in real history is a sobering message to all about the severity of...
The sun is shining, the pool is open, and the boy comes home from Dad’s tomorrow. I feel just a little lighter now that the worst of my stress has come and gone with no major drama. Jacob is driving himself home from Dad’s in his new, gently-used pick-up. I am happy for him that he finally has his own wheels and happy for me now that he will be paying his own insurance. I am nervous about him driving all that way on his own and a little sad that he is grown-up enough to have his own vehicle—just another one of those catch 22 cosmic jokes...
There are times when we have appointments on both sides of the noon lunch time and we try to catch lunch somewhere in between. Last week was one such time with medical appointments in the a.m. and in the p.m. in Grand Island. As such we found a place to eat and we found out that school really was over for the summer. We enjoyed our food and watching the people around us, but, the place had a very heavy population of “children,” school age children. They were all OK with no major problems, but it was an active lunch hour. Somebody was going some...
Anne-Marie Ohmsted has retired after a 35 year career of teaching elementary school at Guide Rock and Superior. Ohmstede’s father was a school superintendent which led to the family making frequent moves when she was a child. When her father accepted the position of superintendent at Guide Rock, he was informed the schools would be closing in five years. Anne-Marie was a junior in high school at the time. That prediction was somewhat of an underestimate. She completed high school, earned her degree from what is now the University of N...

The staff has been deep cleaning the office and admission area in preparation for the season opening....
It may have been a bit breezy for some Lovewell Lake visitors but for most people the Memorial Weekend weather was perfect. Rains earlier in the week had helped to erase the signs of the winter drought. Peony plants were blooming on schedule and area cemeteries looked like well maintained gardens. The U.S. Flags were fluttering in the breeze and showing their full glory. The temperature was neither too hot or nor too cool, instead it was just right for most. As the weekend came to an end,...
The Ruskin Alumni banquet was a wonderful event. I was asked to share my dad’s (Keith Schultz) story about the Class of 1948 and their connection to the gymnasium built in 1949. Here is his story in his words: School Memories By Keith Schultz The Class of 1948. We were the last class to play basketball and volleyball in the little gym in the school house. I’d like to tell the story of how we became an influence on getting this building built. In 1946, we had an administration change. JF Hunter left Ruskin and hired a major fresh out of the arm...
Following the tragic attack on a Texas school, Marty Kobza, superintendent of the Superior schools, made the following statement: Recent events in Texas and around the country involving tragic mass shootings shakes us all to our core. We in the Superior Community are all too familiar with the fear and pain associated with these events. Safety of students is always our first and primary concern. I would like to list some of the things that we have in place. Understand, we intentionally omit a few details we share with the public to prevent...

"Preparation and Planning for the Goal" seem to be the 'go-to' attitude of the culture of the late 20th and early 21st centuries in America. However, for Jeannine Schendt of Lawrence, the plan didn't work out exactly as that preparation and planning wasn't exactly fulfilled after 42 years of teaching in the community of Lawrence and in the Lawrence-Nelson school district. Friends gathered last weekend to throw a 'surprise' retirement party for Mrs. Schendt. They knew their plan worked when...
