These men are examining roofs and telling victims they will be protected from lightning for “X” amount of years if the victim writes a check for “X” amount of money. May 31 is the final date for producers to request a loan or loan deficiency payment (LDP) on 2019 feed grain crops. Because May 31 falls on a non-workday, the deadline is June 1. The feed grain crops eligible for loan include corn, dry peas, grain sorghum, lentils, mustard seed, rice, safflower seed, chickpeas, soybeans and sunflower seed. Because of the current market prices exceeding the 2019 loan rates at the time of this writing, LDPs on the above-mentioned feed grain crops would not apply. As people prepared for their Memorial Weekend cook outs shopping for steaks, ground beef and ribs to BBQ, they found out beef was either in short supply or had almost doubled in price. Some shoppers found the meat shelves almost empty and asked the same question that an 81-year-old woman asked in 1984, in a television ad, “Where’s the beef?” Thanks to the COVID-19 virus that forced some packing plants to close and because of consolidation and centralization in the meat processing industry, the meat supply system has been stressed. Not only...
Amazing the way some things grow and others shrink. While preparing copy for this week’s Nuckolls County Locomotive-Gazette, I read about the sale of the Mt. Clare pool hall. It’s been a long time since there were enough people in the Mt. Clare community to support a pool hall but evidently in 1920 someone thought there was and purchased the existing business. According to the newspaper account the seller was moving to Pauline where he planned to open a garage. Today Mt. Clare is a ghost town and Pauline is in decline. Before this week’s rain...

As a result of his order, Class O and motorcycle licenses set to expire from March 1,2020 through December 31, 2020 for Nebraskans 72 or older will be extended for one year from the date of expiration on the l...

Superior and the surrounding communities were strangely quiet throughout the weekend.
