    Area residents are invited to participate virtually in the Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial Run anywhere and anytime Friday through Sunday. The actual run will depart from Cody Park in North Platte at 8 a.m. Saturday and will feature two-mile and five-mile road routes.     Thirteen teams of three battled high winds and intermittent showers Sunday to start the tournament season at the Lawrence Country Club. Cool and wet conditions may have kept a few fair-weather golfers away, but 39 were up to the challenges of the course and the conditions.   • Robert Kotinek hired as veterans service officer

    Wes Beguin resigned as the Nuckolls County veterans service officer in April. He began serving in the position in January, 2023. The Nuckolls County Board of Commissioners accepted his resignation. Robert Kotinek, a Lawrence resident who formerly served in the position, was hired to replace Beguin.     A graveside burial service for Lorene Friend were held at the Sacred Heart parish cemetery east of Lawrence Saturday, May 18, 2024. Father Bernie Kimminau was in charge of the service where Lorene was laid to rest next to her husband, Robert Friend. Lorene D. Friend was 95 upon her death Nov. 24, 2023, in Dallas, Texas.     The state track and field championship meet at Omaha's Burke Stadium is the ultimate test for student athletes. The Superior girls track and field team qualified for the meet.
