Though we are closing in on what normally is a busy three-day weekend, this year’s holiday is stacking up as a quiet one. Because of the pandemic and restrictions on public assembly, the events which normally draw thousands of people to the area have been cancelled. Though many events have been cancelled, that doesn’t mean everyone is stayi...

Fifty years ago this week I was preparing to observe my first Memorial Day as editor of The Superior Express. For this 24 year-old “youngster” I expected the day would be different for in my life Memorial Days had long been different but I never dreamt how different it would be. In other years I had gone with my grandparents to decorate graves. The Blauvelt side of the family had graves in the Hardy and Superior cemeteries and the Wrench side had graves in Mitchell County. In preparation for the annual pilgrimages to the cemeteries, my gra...
This Memorial Day will be unlike any other Memorial Day in the past. Most all Memorial Day services are cancelled including the one at my hometown cemetery. It is sad but with the virus pandemic, coming together in a large group as is usually done is being avoided. For years as Decoration Day and years later as a Memorial Day there have been veterans groups coming together in their uniforms standing at attention with Ole Glory by their side. Patriotic speeches and prayers are given and then wreaths are placed in honor of the living and the...

We had no day lilies at the Schmeling home at 1127 Kansas Street. I remember seeing them around town. The large Kate Scoular house on the southwest corner of tenth and Commercial streets had some and the “ghost house” south of the new, modern home occupied at that time by George Day which would have been on the southwest corner of Ninth and Commercial streets had a little bit of everything, all growing large and unattended. In that yard were large patches of day lilies. Day lilies have a lily-type of flower that comes up on a stalk from ami...

The Mayview Christian Church, often called Mayview Church or in later years simply Mayview, was located in Jewell County's Brown's Creek Township, Section 17. Names associated with the church were...

If feasible, the council will open the pool depending on the Covid-19 status and the maintenance status. Much of the maintenance is replacing doors, repairing concrete...
