Though some would have us believe the crisis is over and we should return to our previous lifestyle, that is necessarily so as late Wednesday the South Heartland Health District confirmed the first case of COVID-19 had been found in Nuckolls County. The victim is said to be a male in his 50s. We have not learned where he lives in Nuckolls County, not how it is thought he contracted the problem. As expected leadership of the City of Superior government changed hands Monday night. While the meeting was conducted virtually, Sonia Schmidt, Chris Peterson and Jan Diehl, city clerk, were among those meeting in the city council chamber. Tuesday was designated as primary election day in Nebraska and polls were open in Superior, Nelson, Ruskin and Lawrence. Voter turnout was light as many residents asked to have their ballots mailed to them. After receiving the ballots, they had the option to either return to the county election office at Nelson by mail or in person. Members of the Superior Board of Education met virtually Monday evening. All were present. April claims from the general fund in the amount of $520,376.23 were approved. In addition, a contract was extended to Allison Brittenham as a secondary special education teacher. Brittenham is a Superior High School graduate. She is certified in English and the language arts. Monday Governor Pete Ricketts said plans were in place for relaxing some of the directed health measure restrictions for the South Heartland Health District, which includes Adams, Clay, Nuckolls and Webster counties. Friday Jewell County received KN95 masks for 10 percent of the population of the county. The donor of the masks was the Patterson Family Foundation. The Foundation, a charitable family-led foundation in Kansas City, recently purchased a quantity of KN95 respirator masks and donated them for emergency use by more than 100 rural and semi-rural counties in Kansas and northwestern Missouri. As of the first week of May, Jewell County 2020 Census return numbers were falling below surrounding counties. If you have not done so, this is a reminder to fill out the 2020 Census either by mail or on-line. So far, Jewell County has a return rate of 47.6 percent, while surrounding counties are reporting return numbers in the 50 and 60 percent range. Statewide the response rate is 62.7 percent. Thanks to everyone who donated to Jewell County Match Month 2020 the donations reached an amazing total of $46,341. With the more than double match from Dane G. Hansen of $69,511 this totals to $115,852.50 for the Jewell County Community Foundation’s unrestricted fund. This year’s total was more than double last year’s total. Superior Family Medical Center, Nelson Family Medical Center and Edgar Medical Clinic are taking appointments for school and athletic physicals for the 2020-2021 school year. Kindergarteners and seventh graders need physicals and immunizations for school. Shaffer Union Cemetery, often just called Shaffer Cemetery, is located in Section 22 of Harrison Township. Isaac Shaffer donated the land, part of his homestead, for the cemetery. The cemetery is an old one, with at least three burials in 1873. Davis, Donahoo, Fringer, Kranatz, Korb, Morris, Paul Roe, Rogers, Shaffer, Shaw, Tegley, Tindall and Williams are but a few of families with multiple members buried in the cemetery. Evelyn Carol (Bogenhagen) Thompson, 77, was born March 30, 1943 to LaVara Marie (Bolen) and Harlon, Lee Bogenhagen of Wallace, Kan. She died May 5, at her home near Guide Rock, Neb.
