    More than 100 years ago, when picture post cards were popular, a company published a picture of a giant cottonwood tree claiming it was located at Superior and the largest tree in Nebraska. The picture included two men sitting under the tree which was said to have been the location of many historical events.   • Fire drives family of 4 from their rural home

    Late Friday afternoon members of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire at 4037 Road B. Road B is the former route of Highway 3S. It is located south of the current Highway 8 and the former Burlington railroad line. Prior to the fire, the Richard Watson family of four called the well-maintained house their home.     Democrats throughout Nebraska are optimistic that meeting restrictions will soon be lifted and are scheduling their county conventions for various days in May. But if the restrictions aren’t lifted the party has a back up plan. The plan calls for holding the conventions via conference calls. The party’s Nuckolls County convention is set for 7 p.m. May 27.     The Mankato Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the City of Mankato to make Community Clean-Up happen on Tuesday. The Goodwill donation trailer will be parked at the Mankato City building through the weekend for those who are cleaning out.     The April 7, Mankato Council Meeting was held remotely via online Zoom meeting. The first guest speaker was Rex Oliver with Midway Co-op. He discussed installing two concrete grain silos near the sale barn and submitted a building permit to the city. The council thought that was a good idea.     In mid-March the City of Formoso received notice from the Arbor Day Foundation that they were awarded Tree City USA for the 35th year. This award covered the activities and tree care in 2019. Formoso achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of a least two dollars per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
