  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Apr 13, 2023

Possible editor’s notebook People laughed at me when, as a college student, I got lost in Fort Riley and feared I might be shot or at least arrested by the military police. At that time soldiers were not welcome in Manhattan and I didn’t expect a lost college student was welcome to prowl around on the post. I had given a ride to a college coed who was living in a colonel’s home on the post. With her directions I easily found my way to the house but I missed a turn or two trying to get off the post and became hopelessly lost. I drove aroun...

  • Camping in State Parks

    Nancy Stafford|Apr 13, 2023

When I started my trek, I tried to find actual destinations. Often events were weeks or months apart, so I ended up with many side trips. My first planned stop was in northwestern Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Equine Council has a division dedicated to equestrian trails. They hold one- and three-day clinics on trail mitigation and maintenance. They also aid Pennsylvanian equestrian clubs. I took their three-day clinic where we installed three bridges and a ford on a trail in a state park that was doomed to be closed because of the stream damag...

  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Apr 13, 2023

There was a country western song a while back called “I was raised on Country Sunshine.” That’s the way I was raised. Born a country farm girl, I liked the simple things in life. The playgrounds were adventure trips down into the pasture, where there were pond waters, ditches, forts in trees that had fallen down and catching the crawdads in a vegetable can. Rides were taken on horses. There was no bigger thrill then getting chased by a rooster or a hog. Walking on the dirt driveway after a spring rain, barefooted into the mud and feeling it ris...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Apr 13, 2023

Q: Is there any rational evidence for Christianity? A: Oh boy, where do I start? The short answer is Yes! Christianity is the most well attested belief system in the world. While many are unaware of it, I think there is more evidence in support of Christianity than any other belief system. That’s why I’m a Christian! I personally own books 2-inch thick which are filled with evidence for the Christian faith. Obviously, I can’t share all of it with you in a newspaper article so I will cut to the heart of the matter and try to present the ratio...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Apr 13, 2023

Memories . . . With the Lawrence community working to replace a much needed place for community events, every so often I get comments about what all happened in the Lawrence American Legion Hall over the years. It seems that most memorable moments come from early in life, and not as many later in life. For me, that time period came about during the mid-twentieth century, 1950, ‘give or take’ a number of years. A person has to remember the culture of the time as well. It was a time that we were all recovering from the Second World War, and/or fi...

  • Repairs continue on Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence

    Apr 13, 2023

One hundred years of service is quite a duty for any structure, let alone one put out on the great plains of Nebraska. On the inside from ceiling to floor the height is 45 feet. The picture above shows the scaffolding now in the north end of the church building needed to reach damaged plaster. It seems...
