Today, this columnist is giving everyone a “heads up” by warning to watch out for the pranksters and jokers and don’t be “fooled” tomorrow (Friday). It’s April Fool’s Day! It’s been an annual custom on this day to play practical jokes on each other, trying to fool someone into thinking what is said is the truth but really it’s not. After the jokester says his story, and the unsuspecting listener falls for the story as being true, the jokester then has the pleasure of shouting “April Fool!” I must admit many times I have fallen for an untrue...
This newspaper office recently received a few copies of newspapers published in 1913. Apparently the contributors found the papers rolled into a bundle and stashed away in a house they were cleaning. I’m sorry I don’t know where the papers were found. I’ve looked at the front pages trying to determine why they were saved. The collection includes the Sept. 14 and Nov. 27, 1913, issues of the Sunday State Journal published in Lincoln, Neb., the Dec. 4, 1913, and June 24, 1948, issues of The Super...
Q: I’m worried that one day I will lose my faith; how can I make sure that I don’t fall away? A: There is an ongoing theological debate on how and if the warnings against falling away relate to a believer’s salvation. I am not going to go into that because I don’t think that’s the focus of this question. Regardless of the details and implications, the Bible does repeatedly warn believers of the danger of falling away. This is seen particularly in the book of Hebrews, which was written for this very purpose (see Hebrews 2:12; 10:39, etc.). An...
“Women and children first.” We’ve heard that phrase so very often over the years we don’t pay much attention to it anymore. However with all the attention in the news focused on the war in Ukraine, we hear it often. Talking about all the refugees and learning that the overwhelming majority are women and children brings us back to the origin of the phrase and its importance. This century old phrase seems to me to conflict with the newer phrase: “Equal Rights.” So many of our “liberal” friends have been promoting the idea that there is really...

We Americans are so familiar with that little instrument used in our medical field so often . . . the injection needle. It is used so often in our medical practices in this day and age that we seldom give it much extra thought. However, it has been causing trouble for the village of Lawrence in recent days. Last week the Village trustees thought they had caused enough trouble to the village sewer system. A letter was sent out to all village residents, imploring them not to flush the needles down into the sewer system. It seems a pump in the...
