  • History Hunt

    Nancy Stafford|Mar 30, 2023

My original plan when I left Pennsylvania to travel was to follow Route 6 from there to California. After I bought my camper, I headed to AAA for a “trip tick” of the proposed route with accompanying paper maps and travel books. I knew I would take side trips along the way but I could always return to Route 6. I spent a month at my cousin’s estate in Maryland to get my “sea legs” for camping before heading out. I had been several weeks on the road and had several side trips when I crossed the state line from Pennsylvania into Ohio. I came to a...

  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Mar 30, 2023

It seems the last weekend of March and its weather is leading us towards an April Fools joke. The calendar tells us March 20 was the first day of Spring. We were ready for the weather to change from winter to spring. The green blades of wheat are beginning to be seen as the country landscape has barely begun to turn from gray and browns to a light green. Last Saturday, the weather reports led us to believe that there would be a 70 percent to 90 percent chance of rain headed our way. Because it is so dry here, we were hoping the reports were...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Mar 30, 2023

Sunday afternoon, as part of the annual meeting of the Nuckolls County Historical Society held in the museum complex’s Pioneer Hall, those attending were asked to participate in a Nuckolls County Trivia game. I got four and a half answers right. How many can you get? 1. What was the name of the lumber company that had a lumber yard in Superior and Nelson in the early 1900s? (While not part of the question, I think the firm also had yards at Bostwick, Hardy and Edgar.) 2. What did the Fuller family of Angus produce before their first a...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Mar 30, 2023

Q: What really happens when we die? Do we go straight to heaven? Do we go to purgatory? What does the Bible say? A: It is hard to get a full and detailed understanding of the afterlife from Scripture. We are given a general picture and can have complete confidence in the basic elements (i.e., Believers will dwell with God forever, believers will be resurrected, etc.). But there are details about the sequence and circumstances that are debated within the church. For now, let me share some of the truths I believe to be taught clearly, and those...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Mar 30, 2023

It wasn’t quite April yet, but the rain last Saturday was a welcomed event. In looking over the NRD reporting site, there was only two times we received an amount higher than Saturday’s rain. There was a rain in January equal to this one and then you had to go back to September 22 to find an amount higher. April (in this case, March) showers will bring May flowers . . . I have some of those early spring flowers sprouting and hope this rain aids their growth. Enjoy it and pray for more rain. A O The following little quote was written about 25...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|Mar 30, 2023

Thankfully, watching the squirrels in the backyard is the most exciting thing to report this week. The little ones are so cute! We only got some of the walnuts cleaned up in the back last fall, and they have been busy finding and hiding them, as well as attempting a few acrobatic maneuvers on the power lines that make my stomach turn. Watching them is pretty fun, and I don’t mind feeding them. If prices continue to increase, it will be nice to have fat squirrels to hunt! LOL! The last few days, I’vebeen playing catch-up with the household cho...

  • Road work ahead signs multiplying in Superior

    Mar 30, 2023

If you enjoy the challenges of dealing with highway construction, Superior will be the place to be in the coming months, The Nebraska Department of Transportation has projects scheduled for this construction season starting in Superior and going north, south and east. They have nothing to the west but likely that is because the state doesn’t have a highway that runs directly west out of Superior. If there was, they might have scheduled something to do on it. The state spokesman didn’t say why there are so many projects here this year but we...

After 114 years, another chapter in the history of Jewell was brought to a close as demolition began, March 13, 2023, on the building that, among other things, had provided groceries for most of its existence. Greg Wilson was the owner-operator of the huge excavator that did the job. The building had a long, colorful history. • Spring weather carries high stakes for farmers

    Greg Doering|Mar 30, 2023

Kansas Farm Bureau Perhaps the biggest pastime in spring is watching the weather. I could be just searching for a nice Saturday to visit a park or checking to see if I need to carry an umbrella to the office. For farmers and ranchers, however, spring weather is high stakes and full of questions. Will there be enough rain to awaken the wheat crop and carry it through to maturity? If there is, will it be too much to prevent planting corn and soybeans? Will there be enough moisture to grow enough grass for cattle to graze? Unfortunately for more...

  • Stranger Danger

    Teraesa Bruce|Mar 30, 2023

We think since we live away from the cities in a rural area, that we, and in turn, our children are safe from the dangers of being kidnapped. Unfortunately, that is the furthest from the truth. A friend of mine was telling me about an encounter her daughter had at a local restaurant. Two men were in line ahead of her, and a third let her go ahead of him since he was talking on the phone. She thought nothing of it and got in line. They kept glancing at her and were making her feel uncomfortable, so she decided to call a friend to help ease her...

The committee, with the help of Nebraksa Public Power District’s Economic Development team, put together a survey addressing these needs. Beginning April 3, this s...
