  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Mar 25, 2021

I have always been thankful I live in a small populated rural community, but within the past two or three years, I feel doubly blessed to live where I do. Farming and ranching is a good life. There has been rioting with the terrible looting and destruction of property and businesses in cities on the east and west coasts. Though most of the political unrest shows up on television and on social media, around here it has been mostly respectfully shown. There are no suggestions of picketing or boycotting local businesses because of a difference of...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Mar 25, 2021

Ninety years ago businesses which belonged to the Superior Commercial Club joined together to sponsor Black Cat Days. The event attracted statewide attention and business owners reported the two-day sales event was responsible for their best two days of the year. The event demonstrated the power of advertising when a product the people want is combined with a price they can afford, The Express was one of the participating business firms and the results far exceeded expectations. The Express editor offered to trade a one-year subscription to...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Mar 25, 2021

Living in a ‘rural’ area of the United States, I suspect that many of us receive our National news from our TV. TV is not all bad, but it certainly is not all good either. I know of individuals who do not have a TV in their homes. Over the past many years I have received a few bits of advice: “don’t watch FOX news on TV . . .” or “Rush Limbaugh doesn’t know a thing . . .” Etc. What I have concluded from the well intentioned (if not sometimes silly) advice was that all accurate “News” come from the major networks: NBC, ABC or CBS, or even CNN...

  • My Crazy Life

    Teraesa Bruce|Mar 25, 2021

I’ve been having a rough time with “adulting” the past few days. Maybe it’s the weather that’s got me in a funk, who knows! Robert was home for a bit Saturday and Sunday. He had gone with a friend to Wisconsin to pick up his car, and we happened to “make the cut” for a pit stop on the way back to the base. I miss the kid, and one of these days, I hope he can make a trip home without his tanker crew. Don’t get me wrong, I love those guys too, but I’d like to be able to have some one-on-one with my son from time to time. We’ve been workin...

  • NSP SWAT team assists local officers with Superior arrest

    Mar 25, 2021

To the unsuspecting, Sunday morning looked like an auction day in East Superior. There were people out in the yards and the streets were clogged with vehicles. But look closer, it wasn't a normal Sunday morning in a rural community. The vehicles were emblazed with words like "State Trooper" or "Sheriff." And many of the people were wearing vests but the blaze orange vests we associate with the hunter safety. They were hunters, all right, but their desired prey was not a trophy buck deer. The veh...

  • SHHD COVID report improves

    Mar 25, 2021

With COVID-19 vaccinations continuing, area residents seem to be relaxing and returning to their old habits and activities but the New York Times warned on Saturday that infections are plateauing at a troubling level as variants spread. By Saturday, officials in at least 20 states had committed to opening cornavirus vaccine appointments to all adults in March or April. Neither Kansas nor Nebraska were included in the list of states. But both states are opening appointments to a broader range of people. In the South Heartland Health District...

  • Replacing Superior gym floor

    Mar 25, 2021

The Superior High School gymnasium is having a new floor installed. Several years ago, a water pipe in the utilities room adjacent to the gymnasium broke in the middle of the night. The decision was made to resurface the floor. The original Wildcat logo in the center of the court was replaced. Fast forward...

  • Severe weather week begins with a soaker

    Mar 25, 2021

Record setting rainfall may not be what we first associate with severe weather in Nebraska but that is what parts of the state received on Monday, the first day of Nebraska’s Severe Weather Awareness Week . The special week continues through Friday. For residents of the plains, spring often brings outbreaks of severe weather which may include thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes. Nebraskans now have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. One of the first ways was the civil defense sirens which most communities still have. Fifty years ago S...

    Mar 25, 2021

Last we heard, the investigation into the fire which earlier this month burned over a large portion of the Jamestown Wildlife Area was continuing as investigators try to determine the cause of the fire. Though we have not learned of a confirmed cause, it appears the fire may have been started with embers from an earlier fire that was not located on wildlife area property. The fire burned over approximately 900 acres and was not part of a Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks area management plan....
