Ocassionally we publish columns written by, award-winning, syndicated columnist, playwright, and author named Daris Howard. He sends us two columns a week with the hope our readers will enjoy them so much they will decide to order one of the books he had for sale on his website. Most weeks we get an email late Monday night or early Tuesday morning with his offerings for the week. Usually, but not always I open the email to see what his topic is for that week. Ones I find well suited for this area are processed and put into what we call the...
While taking a winter trip in Texas, we made a stop in a favorite town called Fredericksburg. Every time we go to Texas, it is a stop we make. It’s in the Texas Hill Country and is known for it’s big and small ranches, peach and pecan groves, cowboy attire and friendly people. It was founded by Germans. This is carried out within the town by food, clean streets, tidy and well kept houses and in their ancestor’s customs. Western music plays at the eating establishments, daytime and night time. We aren’t the only outsiders who have been drawn t...
Q: What does it really mean to love God? A: The first thing to know about love is the Bible sets God Himself as the ultimate example of what it means to love (I John 4:8). This is one reason why love is so difficult to define: to understand love we must understand God! The best I can do is share the biblical passages that describe what love is. From these we can glean the elements of real love and work towards a definition that lines up with Scripture. One clear element of love is that it involves self-sacrifice. John 3:16 and I John 3:16 tell...
I’ll probably get back to politics later, but I wanted to give the American Bald Eagle a little publicity to start this week. This inclination came from two events last week. First: Nancy and I make our share of trips to Hastings every week for medical visits and other reasons. It doesn’t happen every trip, but we do see eagles (usually near the Little Blue River) every once in a while. See them is usually a surprise and by the time we come to the conclusion that bird was actually an eagle, it is gone out of sight. During a warm day last wee...
I’m having trouble getting my ducks in a row this week and keeping them there. Every time I have started a task, I have been re-tasked to something completely different. I feel like I’m running in circles. After months of looking, debating, and scrutinizing, the hubby and I finally purchased a new bed and frame. Our budget was less than impressive, but we needed something. We knew we wanted a king-size bed because our queen was too small and hard as a rock, and the cat needed more room to sprawl out between the two of us! LOL! Then there was...

Fires were burning on both sides of the highway. Scott Nondorf, Superior fire chief, reported he issued nine burn permits Thursday. Snowfall had lowered the fire danger. One of the permits was issued to Andy Meyers. He was burning trees along the river bank Thursday and Friday as part of a controlled burn. The fire reignited Sunday. Nondorf...
