  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Mar 9, 2023

Within six months, two aunts have left the Heskett family. Both will always be cherished but the one who recently died was for many of us nieces and nephews, like a mother we didn’t have with us anymore and someone we knew we could turn to. For me, she was all that but mostly she was like the big sister I never had. For many of us, she was the one who we knew we could turn to that would listen to what we had to say. We could tell her anything and trust that in her reply, she would remain calm and understand. She was our encourager, in s...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Mar 9, 2023

There hasn’t been a lot of hoopla associated with Superior celebrations in recent times but that wasn’t always the case. For example, I cite the Diamond Jubilee held in September, 1950, to celebrate the town’s founding in 1875. For that celebration, the late Oran King composed a song set to the tune of Alexander’s Rag Time Band. Mr. King was the first to publicly sing the song. He sang it as a solo but soon a quartet composed of Bill McBroom, George Day, Dick Elliott and Donn Crilly were singing the song at public gatherings. It was also sa...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Mar 9, 2023

Q: If all I have to do to be saved is believe what incentive is there for me to do good works? A: You are correct that a person’s salvation and eternal destiny are determined solely by our acceptance of the gospel of Jesus Christ; “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved,” (Acts 16:31). God does not hold our salvation over our heads, threatening to send us to hell if we don’t fill a daily quota of good works (Romans 4:5; 5:1, 6, 8-9, etc.). Does this mean that God does not care how we live? Is there no good reason to do good wo...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Mar 9, 2023

“There’s never a good day for a funeral.” That little phrase was coined many years ago and is as true today as it was when I first heard it. I bring it up today only because we attended funeral services of a niece Monday and it was an amazing event, just a bad day for a funeral. A young (age 54) lady who hasn’t lived in Nebraska for many a year died and was buried in Grand Island. Between the Rosary service and the funeral service, the church overflowed with family, friends and relation. The event reminded me so much of a different funeral...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|Mar 9, 2023

A couple of weeks ago, we headed down to see Robert on a Saturday. He was set to deploy the next week, so we wanted to wish him well in person. We even got to meet his new girlfriend. He was so nervous for us to meet her that he made me nervous. He kept texting me about where we planned to have lunch, and he said he wanted everything to be perfect. I finally had to tell him to stop cause his anxiety gave me anxiety. She had already met his dad and still wanted to date him, so it should have been an easy meeting for George and me. LOL! We had a...

  • Festival to tell The Reel Story

    Mar 9, 2023

Plans are coming together for the 2023 rendition of the Lady Vestey Victorian Festival. It is extra hard this year as the Superior Chamber of Commerce does not currently have a manager and the chamber’s manager has traditionally been the event coordinator. However, volunteers have long played an important role in making the festivals a success and their role is even more important this year. Like in the past, this year’s festival will be a blend of old and new ideas. While the traditional style of carnivals which played at some of the first fes...

  • Daylight Saving Time is Sunday

    Teraesa Bruce|Mar 9, 2023

This weekend my husband said to me, “I can’t believe Daylight Saving Time starts in just a week, and this year will be the last year we have to turn our clocks ahead,” to which I replied, “I don’t think that went through yet.” I had to look into it, and despite attempts to legislate out the time shift, Daylight Saving Time is scheduled to begin again for much of the United States at 2 a.m. local time Sunday. The Sunshine Preservation Act of 2021 was enacted by the United States Senate on March 15, 2022, just days after clocks were changed to...

  • Willa Cather had connections to Kearney State College and community

    Tyler Ellyson|Mar 9, 2023

In her final story – “The Best Years” – author Willa Cather writes about the relationship between a school superintendent, Evangeline Knightly, and a young teacher named Lesley Ferguesson. Published posthumously, the story details the kindness and wisdom Knightly shares with the teacher before shifting to the future, when the superintendent returns to town to leave flowers on Ferguesson’s grave. Cather wrote “The Best Years” in 1945 – just two years before her death – drawing heavily on her own life and childhood experiences. “At the end of he...
