With an angry Russian Bear upsetting world affairs, it is difficult to follow the usual format for Notebook entries. Hopefully, the current war can be contained in Europe but it could easily become WWIII. With much of the West focused on what the Russians on doing, Iran may decide now is a good time to invade Israel, North Korea could use the same logic to go after South Korea and Communist China could invade Taiwan. But we must be careful to not worry ourselves sick about what might happen. We must remember God is in control and we must wait...
Any ideas for winter meals? Most of the time it seems like the same menu pattern at our home is often overly repeated. There are the soups, casseroles and stews. There are roasts, noodles, beans and cornbread. These meals are repeated and repeated. This especially is a problem when there are only two to fix for. Thankfully my husband does not mind eating leftovers. Some people enjoy grilling on their grills even throughout the winter, so there is that option. We enjoy eating breakfast items for lunch and even supper. There is nothing like...
Presenting biblical answers to tough questions Q: The Bible says, “Blessed are the meek.” When I look around at real life it doesn’t seem like the meek are being blessed, it seems like they’re getting passed over. How can this verse be true when experience seems to show the opposite? A: This question brings up one of the deepest challenges of the Christian faith. Put simply the challenge is this: the truths of God’s Word often contradict what we think we know about how the world works. This forces us to choose between trusting our perspecti...
I hope this doesn’t bore you, but as I’ve said before, the comic sections of the newspaper is one of my favorite parts. And, one of my favorite comic strips is “Shoe.” Many of the issues involve a newspaper reporter and his editor. In a recent issue, the dialogue went like this: Shoe is busy writing his latest and in the first frame the editor is saying to himself: “Shoe is like a car alarm.” In the second frame, the editor is seen replying: “Lots of noise, but no one pays attention to him.” Even in our little corner of the world I can rel...
One of the most difficult tasks for an instrumental band instructor is how to keep band members practicing their instruments during the summer months. School is not in session and the lure of playing baseball or softball, hanging out at the swimming pool or roller skating rink or just taking it easy mean no time to practice playing a band instrument. When fall hits, it would be nice to “hit the ground running” with band members being “fine tuned.” When I was growing up in Superior our high school band instructor, Ralph Spongberg, was well li...
I’m so tired of being tired! I did have a productive Saturday, the first in a while. I suppose that means I’m starting to get back to my ol’self. I got the house clean, laundry done and had supper on the table by six. Then on Sunday, I was up and moving by half-past six, which, if you know me, you know that doesn’t happen often. Sunday morning I was doing a little catch-up for work and did my best to work ahead a little, just in case I get sick again. Sunday afternoon, we went over to Mom’s to celebrate her birthday. My brother and his famil...

A Florida man who died Saturday after crashing his truck while fleeing from police is earlier that day thought to have been in Nuckolls County. Instead of stopping, the patrol said Derek Stortzum of Brooksville, Florida, fled from the trooper. The Highway Patrol used a patrol car to bump into Stortzum’s truck in an attempt to end the pursuit. Trooper Tod Hileman said Stortzum lost control of his truck and the v...
For the second Lady Vestey Victorian Festival, volunteers built a replica of a horsedrawn tolley once used to ferry passengers from a distant train station to the main part of town. In the early days of Superior, there wasn’t much need for such a trolley as three of the four railroad companies serving Superior had their stations less than a block from the Superior business district. In fact there was a cafe located between the tracks on which the Burlington,Northwestern and Santa Fe trains arrived and the Union Hotel was less than a block f... Website
