Many families have special foods they prepare for Christmas and this time of year newspapers often publish holiday recipes. My mother had a recipe drawer in her kitchen on Blauvelt’s Hill. That drawer was filled to over flowing with cookbooks and advertising pieces chock full of holiday food ideas. Since my father’s oldest brother was a Gas Service Company manager, we always got copies of the recipes promoted by the company’s home agent who promoted natural gas ranges as the best cooking device. I’m not sure any of those recipes. were used at...
Through the years receiving Christmas cards and greetings, I have looked forward to them but I’m wondering if they are becoming a thing of the past. For many years, our Christmas card basket sat proudly on our kitchen table filled to the brim with Christmas cards we received. Last year the basket was only one-fourth filled. This year we wonder how many cards will be received and placed in the basket. Receiving Christmas cards is appreciated, especially those containing notes and letters reporting on family news. These are really welcomed. So, i...
Q. Is there a need to study the Old Testament since the teachings of Jesus are in the New Testament? Great question! The Bible is divided into Old Testament and New Testament (see the table of contents in your Bible). But many people struggle with reading the Old Testament since many passages do not seem to relate to our lives as easily as those of the New Testament. However we must be careful not to think that the Old Testament lacks the teachings of Jesus. In fact, when teaching his disciples after being raised from the dead, Jesus revealed...
As you age, Christmas presents change. Babies may get a stuffed animal or a rattle, but often the bulk of the gifts are items for the nursery like lamps, blankets or pictures. Some new outfits are normally part of the mix, too. As the toddler stage approaches, there are push toys, ride-ons and skill building items. Often books are part of the gift pile, and there always seems to be a few clothes sneaking into the offerings. In fact, as we age, clothes seem to take over most of the gift stack. One of the family traditions of times gone by is...
For years we’ve heard the phrase in high school sports: “It’s hard to beat a team three times in a season.” In rural areas in particular, it is easy to play a team three times and quite often that phrase seems to come true. To be honest I never heard it said in college sports. Until last weekend . . . It changed when a number of sports commentators on TV used that phrase during the volleyball game between the Nebraska Cornhusker Volleyball team and the Wisconsin University Volleyball team. Nebraska had already defeated Wisconsin the first two t...

Christmas night, Dec. 25, there will be a free band concert and program at the Hardy Hall awith candy for the kiddies. Hunger isn't something most Deshler Lutheran School students think about and especially when they dine on their noon meal prepared by Rachelle Jarchow, DLS cook. Just mention her name, and the students cheer! Each school semester, Deshler Lutheran Schools support a mission project which this fall has been Mercy Meals through Orphan Grain...
Maag Park in Jewell is all dressed up for the holidays! New lights on the park trees plus a 30-foot-tall light tree give the park quite a bit of sparkle. There is also a new nativity in the center of the park and a grouping of reindeer on the corner. Across the street, by the door to the Jewell Community Center, a lighted snowman welcomes all to Jewell. Also, in case you don't know how many days until Christmas, there is a sign that tells any and all when to expect Santa! These decorations are...
Sunday afternoon, residents from Superior, Courtland, Davenport, Deshler, Scandia, North Branch and perhaps other communities, gathered at the Mike and Deb Worm barn southeast of Webber for Christmas in a Barn. The event began sometime in the 1990s when Doris Worm's (Mike's mother) third grade Sunday School class did not understand what a stable was. Thus, the Worm family invited the class to their barn. At the time, they owned a pair of cross donkeys. Other animals from their farm have joined t...

Last Sunday was the lighting of the third candle of the Advent wreath, a pink candle meaning joy. A present personally given to each one of us, by our Lord and Savior. What does this mean? How do I get this gift of joy? We find joy throughout our lives, in different ways and levels. When people of their own free will choose to do loving things for us, this pure love act brings us great joy and happiness. God feels the same way. He wants love that has come from someone of their own free will. How do I receive this gift of joy from Jesus? By...
