    A World Marriage Day celebration was started in 1983 in the United States. It is celebrated on the second Sunday of February annually. In northwestern Nuckolls County the Catholic parishes of Sacred Heart in Lawrence and St. Stephen just south of Lawrence celebrated the event following the weekend Masses: Saturday evening at Sacred Heart and Sunday morning at St. Stephen.     The Lawrence-Nelson girls basketball team saw their path to the district finals blocked by Shelton. The one-loss Bulldogs put an end to the Raiders' hopes with a 65-18 walloping at Shelton Friday. Lawrence-Nelson earned their way into the sub-district D-2 6 final when they downed Heartland Lutheran 50-30 at Shelton last Tuesday.     The third quarter cost the Lawrence-Nelson boys basketball team an opportunity to defeat Deshler at Nelson Friday. The Raiders went down 41-30 in their final regular season game.     Joseph "Joe" Patrick Sullivan, the son Eugene and Velma (Bailey) Sullivan was born on a farm Feb. 16, 1939, near Superior, Nebraska. He died February 17, 2023 at the CHI Health St. Francis Medical Center at Grand Island, Nebraska at the age of 84 years and one day. He was baptized in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Superior where he was a lifelong member. In 1960, he was united in marriage to Nancy Harpham. To this union was born one daughter and four sons.     Charles "Chuck" E. Persinger, Sr., 74, of Beatrice died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, at Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center. He was born Aug. 12, 1948, in Superior. Chuck was a hard worker and worked for more than 25 years on government contracts as a ration man on several Army bases.     The Superior High School boys and girls wrestling teams competed at the state tournament held at Omaha's CHI Center Thursday through Saturday. The event marked the first time Superior girls competed at the state event. They finished in 60th place, with six points, in the 74 team Class D field.
